Lyric fairy tale in three acts by Antonín Dvořák Libretto by Jaroslav Kvapil Version for reduced orchestra by Marián Lejava in Czech with German subtitles The mermaid Rusalka has only one wish: She longs to leave her water home as a person under the warm sun to live and get to know love. For the prince she dreams of, she is ready to leave everything behind. Rusalka ignores Aquarius' warnings and lets the witch Ježibaba transform her into human form in order to meet her loved one - knowing that she will have to pay a high price for it. For a wonderful moment, Rusalka floats in a blissful frenzy of love with her prince, but happiness does not last long ... For what is known in many European traditions, tragically ending fairy tales about the loving mermaid, Antonín Dvořák created gorgeous music that captures the tenderly intimate moments just as touchingly as the great dramatic outbursts. Director Dirk Schmeding, who was most recently a guest at the Braunschweig State Theater with a highly acclaimed production of Weinberg's "The Passenger", tells in "Rusalka" about the incompatibility of two elements that make a classic "happy ending" impossible.
