The beautiful Salome is fascinated by the voice of the prophet Jochanaan (= John the Baptist). He condemns the decadent life of her mother Herodias and her stepfather Herod and proclaims the Dawn of a new age. Salome lets the prophet come out of his dungeon, but he refuses to look at her. When she is to dance for her stepfather, she demands the head of Jochanaan as a reward. Now he can no longer escape her gaze...
Since the biblical accounts in Matthew and Mark, the story of the Judean princess Salome has become a timeless myth. Artists of all eras and directions have tried to capture the image of a fascinating woman of almost childlike purity and seductive beauty, whose blossoming sexuality erupts in destructive lust.

When Richard Strauss saw a performance of Oscar Wilde's one-act play in Berlin in the winter of 1902/03, he made up his mind to choose "Salome" as the subject of his next opera.
He himself set up Wilde's drama as the libretto in Hedwig Lachmann's translation. Like the model, Strauss' opera provoked fierce resistance when it premiered in 1905 at the Dresden Court Opera, primarily due to moral concerns about the “immorality” of the material, but also because Strauss took his score to the limits of tonality. Nevertheless, "Salome" was Richard Strauss' first outstanding success as an opera composer and is today regarded as one of the most striking operas of the early musical modernity of the 20th century.
