For more than a hundred years, opera directors have puzzled over questions: who are Jokanaan and Salome, whose collision leads to disaster, and what is the ten-minute dance of the seven veils that King Herod's stepdaughter performs at the climax of the opera? Director Marat Gatsalov, whose work is well known to fans of the drama theater, made his debut at the opera house - and resolutely canceled all the clichés that had stuck to Salome for a hundred years. There is no oriental striptease in his performance, no fake head on a silver platter, no palm trees under the exhausted sky of Judea, there are no signs of the country and era at all. The action takes place in the sophisticated design space of the artist Monica Pormale, in huge skyscraper letters. Сто с лишним лет оперные режиссеры ломают голову над вопросами: кто такие Иоканаан и Саломея, чье столкновение ведет к катастрофе, и что такое десятиминутный танец семи покрывал, который падчерица царя Ирода исполняет в кульминации оперы? Режиссер Марат Гацалов, чьи работы хорошо знакомы любителям драматического театра, дебютировал в оперном театре – и все штампы, приставшие к «Саломее» за сотню лет, решительно отменил. Нет в его спектакле ни восточного стриптиза, ни бутафорской головы на серебряном блюде, ни пальм под истомленным небом Иудеи, нет вообще никаких примет страны и эпохи. Действие происходит в утонченном дизайнерском пространстве художницы Моники Пормале, в огромных буквах-небоскребах. Солисты самоотверженно бросаются в жерло вулкана, который Рихард Штраус спрятал в «Саломее», а Валерий Гергиев и оркестр виртуозно укрощают кипящую полтора часа без перерыва музыкальную стихию.
