Schoenberg in Hollywood Tod Machover

Arnold Schönberg, founder of so-called twelve-tone music and the central figure of the Second Vienna School, emigrated to the USA in 1933 - fleeing from smoldering anti-Semitism - and came into contact with Hollywood and the genre of film music in Los Angeles. The chamber opera “Schoenberg in Hollywood” by the American composer Tod Machover, which premiered in Boston in November 2018, addresses this artistic “clash” based on a meeting between the composer and the film producer Irving Thalberg. In cinematic flashbacks, the work tells different episodes from the life of Arnold Schönberg, takes us to Vienna at the turn of the century and resurrects his companions Mathilde Zemlinsky and Gertrud Kolisch, composer colleagues from Gustav Mahler to Alban Berg and his rival Richard Gerstl.

The European premiere of the work, planned for April 2020, can now finally take place, exactly two years after the originally planned premiere date. In the immediate vicinity of the Arnold Schönberg Center, which is the world's most important research institution on this artistic personality and is also located on Schwarzenbergplatz, there could be no more appropriate theater space to present the work for the first time in Europe.
