“Incinerated remains, greedy tomb,
Made from my beauteous sun and earthly heaven.“

Met deze woorden opent Claudio Monteverdi Sestina. De dichter Scipione Agnelli schreef een tekst ter nagedachtenis van de overleden zangeres Catarina Martinelli. Het zesdelige muzikale gedicht, vertelt over de tranen van een man voor het graf van zijn geliefde. Monteverdi, die op korte tijd zijn echtgenote en zijn lievelingssopraan Martinelli verloren had, koos dit aangrijpende  gedicht als de basis voor zijn madrigaal Sestina.
Voor deze productie vertalen kunstenaars uit verschillende disciplines de ontroerende kracht van deze compositie, samen met het gedicht Triomf van de dood van Francesco Petrarca en ander werk van Monteverdi, naar een hedendaagse setting. 
Sestina verkent de mogelijkheden van een ruimtelijke installatie met videobeelden, een soundscape en een live gezongen concert met muziek van Monteverdi. Tegen de achtergrond van de videobeelden en soundscape vertellen vijf jonge zangers, ondersteund door een luit en een gamba, over de dood en de liefde.

With these words Claudio Monteverdi opens Sestina . The poet Scipione Agnelli wrote a text in memory of the late singer Catarina Martinelli. The six-part musical poem tells of a man's tears before the grave of his beloved. Monteverdi, who had recently lost his wife and his favorite soprano Martinelli, chose this poignant poem as the basis for his madrigal Sestina.
For this production, artists from various disciplines translate the moving power of this composition, together with Francesco Petrarca's poem  Triumph of Death  and other works by Monteverdi, into a contemporary setting. 
Sestina explores the possibilities of a spatial installation with video images, a soundscape and a live sung concert with music by Monteverdi. Against the background of the video images and soundscape, five young singers, supported by a lute and a gamba, talk about death and love.
