The violinist Alexandra Conunova had her breakthrough in 2012 as prize winner in the Joseph Joachim International Violin Competition.
This evening she is a soloist in Jean Sibelius's personal and fascinating violin concerto, characterized by drama, romance and lively thematic imagination. The intense final movement has been described as a polonaise for three polar bears! The Danish conductor Nestor Michael Schønwandt opens the concert with his compatriot CFE Horneman's overture to the opera Aladdin, and ends with Felix Mendelssohn's 3rd Symphony - inspired by a visit to Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh, "where Queen Mary lived and loved".
