Genoa, 14th century: the privateer and plebeian Simon Boccanegra is swept into power by a rallying crowd, stirred into a frenzy by his supporters Pietro and Paolo Albiani. He hopes that, in acceding to the title of doge, he will be able to sway his adversary, the aristocrat Jacopo Fiesco, into letting him marry Fiesco's daughter Maria. Fiesco accepts, conveniently neglecting to tell Boccanegra that Maria has just died, under the condition that Simon let him have the granddaughter born in secret to Simon and Maria—but she has gone missing…

An intensely political opera, Simon Boccanegra offers a glimpse of the internecine battles that wracked the various kingdoms of Italy all through the composer's life—especially in its 1881 version, presented here with richness and depth at the Zürich Opera House, led by an astonishing Christian Gerhaher in the title role. The tragedy takes on an extra, personal dimension in the biography of Verdi, who relived—through the character of Simon Boccanegra, for whom he bore a particular affection—the early loss of his wife and children…

Intrigue, family tragedies, power struggles – these words aptly describe Giuseppe Verdi’s opera “Simon Boccanegra”. And the opera is somehow frighteningly topical: in this piece with only one female role, the men write history and the women are the victims. The world premiere flopped, but almost 25 years later the opera received thunderous applause at a new performance in Milan’s La Scala. Andreas Homoki has staged this second and revised version at the Zurich Opera House. Its premiere was one of the last conducted by outgoing music director Fabio Luisi and Christian Gerhaher’s much-lauded role debut as Simon Boccanegra.

Giuseppe Verdi had a particular fondness for dark timbres and deep voices, as operas such as Macbeth , Il trovatore or Don Carlo show . Simon Boccanegrais one of the composer's lesser-known but no less beautiful scores, which is also characterized by gloomy moods and conflicts between deep male voices. The baritone Simon Boccanegra is the main character in this historically inspired drama about a social outsider who is elected the first Doge of the city of Genoa in the 14th century. His competitor is the bass Jacopo Fiesco, who represents the power of the nobility. Before this political conflict between two social classes, Verdi was also interested in the broken family structures of Boccanegras, who had to find out about the death of his beloved, but also found his lost daughter. The third deep voice in this emotionally upsetting drama is the bass-baritone Paolo Albiani,

Andreas Homoki's staging of this Verdi opera was created under pandemic conditions and experienced an extraordinary, poignant premiere evening in front of 50 live viewers and a huge television audience on the TV channel Arte. Since the choir - and with it the power of the people in this piece - could only be present vocal, but not scenic, Andreas Homoki focused entirely on the chamber play in Christian Schmidt's labyrinthine stage. He created differentiated characters and a stringent and tense narrative arc. Corresponding to the different time levels of the action, his staging also opens up imaginary spaces of memory. For the title role we were able to win the French baritone Ludovic Tézier in this revival, who is celebrated worldwide as a Verdi interpreter and most recently played Simon Boccanegra at the Opéra de Paris. With Jennifer Rowley, Christof Fischesser and Nicholas Brownlee, singers from the excellent premiere cast are back in Zurich.
