The first patients of the day in the emergency room are the couple Maria and Josef Winter. But a lady pushes forward. The listing of her symptoms allows the senior physician to recognize the hypochondriac immediately, he hands her over to the inexperienced and overwhelmed resident doctor for treatment. The ambitious colleague Dr. Bandura persuades him to do an expensive computed tomography of the patient - because the researcher needs certain images for her study. She takes the opportunity and puts herself and a third patient in the tube. One CT scan shows a tumor, the others show normal, healthy brains. In contrast to the resident doctor, who is afraid to break the bad news, the researcher is delighted because it seems to be the type of tumor which she explores. She takes on the unpleasant task of enlightening the patient. Coffee break, the door to the ready room is closed. The doctors scold the patients. And in the waiting room, the patients complain about the doctors who don't take enough time. After the break, the suffering patient's husband has to admit that his wife is not insured. Triumphantly, the nurse directs him back to the waiting area. When preparing for the referral for the tumor patient, the resident doctor discovers the error: the two CT images of the patient and his colleague are reversed - the tumor is in the doctor's head. The next patient is called into the examination room - but nobody comes. In the meantime, Mrs. Winter gave birth to her child in the waiting room with the active help of other emergency patients. Neither life nor death can be stopped.

Die ersten Patienten dieses Tages in der Notfallsambulanz sind das Paar Maria und Josef Winter. Doch eine Dame drängt sich vor. Die Aufzählung ihrer Symptome lässt den Oberarzt sofort die Hypochonderin erkennen, er übergibt sie zur Behandlung an den unerfahrenen und überforderten Turnusarzt. Die ehrgeizige Kollegin Dr. Bandura redet ihm ein, eine teure Computertomographie der Patientin zu machen - denn die Forscherin braucht bestimmte Aufnahmen für ihre Studie. Sie nützt die Gelegenheit und legt sich selbst und einen dritten Patienten auch noch in die Röhre. Auf einem CT-Bild ist ein Tumor zu sehen, die anderen zeigen unauffällige, gesunde Gehirne. Im Gegensatz zum Turnusarzt, der sich fürchtet, die schlechte Nachricht zu überbringen, ist die Forscherin entzückt, denn es scheint sich genau um die Tumorart zu handeln, die sie erforscht. Sie übernimmt die unangenehme Aufgabe, die Patientin aufzuklären. Kaffeepause, die Tür zum Bereitschaftsraum wird geschlossen. Die Ärzte schimpfen über die Patienten. Und im Warteraum schimpfen die Patienten über die Ärzte, die sich nicht genug Zeit nehmen. Nach der Pause muss der Ehemann der leidenden Patientin eingestehen, dass seine Frau nicht versichert ist. Triumphierend verweist die Schwester ihn wieder auf den Warteplatz. Bei der Vorbereitung zur Überweisung für die Tumorpatientin entdeckt der Turnusarzt den Fehler: die beiden CT-Bilder der Patientin und seiner Kollegin sind vertauscht - der Tumor ist im Kopf der Ärztin. Der nächste Patient wird ins Untersuchungszimmer hereingerufen - doch keiner kommt. Im Wartezimmer hat inzwischen Frau Winter unter tatkräftiger Hilfe anderer Notfallpatienten ihr Kind geboren. Weder das Leben noch der Tod lassen sich aufhalten.
