The libretto was written by Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky based on the short story of the same name by Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol. 

The first mention of this comic opera comes from Mussorgsky's private correspondence from 1874. The story of the opera takes place in the Belarusian countryside. Old Cherevik will take his daughter Parassia to the fair for the first time. Here he meets his dear Grick. He asks Cherevik for Parasi's hand. Cherevik agrees, but Parasia's stepmother Chivria steps in to the young couple. Her authority wanes when she discovers that she has an affair with the son of a local priest. Everything ends up well at the village party. After MP Mussorgsky's death, the opera remained unfinished and its fate was unclear. Several composers tried to save the work. The State Opera presents a version of N. Cherepnin from 1923.
