Als klein jongetje zwaaide acteur Stefaan Degand al met een dirigeerstokje op de salontafel, met de geluidsinstallatie op maximaal volume. Al bijna zijn hele leven droomt hij ervan om ooit met een 80-koppig orkest de Vierde Symfonie van Brahms te dirigeren in een uitverkochte concertzaal. 

Die droom komt nu uit. Stefaan is voor Canvas begonnen aan een muzikale ontdekkingstocht, waarin hij op zoek gaat naar de ziel van Johannes Brahms. Hij verdiepte zich een jaar lang in de partituur en leerde onder leiding van de jonge dirigente Pascale Van Os de fijne kneepjes van een symfonisch orkest beheersen. Daarnaast ontmoette Stefaan Brahms-specialisten en internationale topdirigenten zoals Antony Hermus, chef-dirigent van het Belgian National Orchestra, en reisde hij naar het Oostenrijkse dorp waar Brahms in 1885 zijn magnum opus voltooide. 

Stefaans muzikale odyssee wordt gefilmd door de filmmakers van Borgerhoff & Lamberigts en begin 2024 uitgezonden op Canvas in de serie Maestro Degand. De reeks eindigt met een uitvoering van de Vierde Symfonie van Brahms in de Henry Le Bœufzaal van Bozar, met het Belgian National Orchestra onder muzikale leiding van Stefaan Degand. Het concert wordt uitgevoerd door Canvas.

Tout petit déjà, l’acteur Stefaan Degand agitait une baguette sur la table basse, avec la sono au maximum. Presque toute sa vie, il a rêvé de diriger un jour la Symphonie nr. 4 de Brahms, avec un orchestre de 80 musiciens, dans une salle de
concert comble.

Ce rêve est en train de se réaliser. Stefaan s’est lancé dans un voyage musical de découverte pour Canvas, à la recherche de l’âme de Johannes Brahms. Il s’est immergé dans la partition pendant un an et, sous la houlette de la jeune chef d’orchestre Pascale Van Os, il a appris à maîtriser les subtilités d’un orchestre symphonique. En outre, Stefaan a rencontré des spécialistes de Brahms et des chefs d’orchestre internationaux de premier plan, tels qu’Antony Hermus, chef principal du Belgian National Orchestra, et se rend dans le village autrichien où Brahms a achevé son opus magnum en 1885.

L’odyssée musicale de Stefaan sera filmée par les réalisateurs de Borgerhoff & Lamberigts et diffusée sur Canvas début 2024 dans la série Maestro Degand. La série se termine par une interprétation de la Quatrième Symphonie de Brahms dans la salle Henry Le Bœuf de Bozar, avec le Belgian National Orchestra sous la direction musicale de Stefaan Degand. Le concert sera sous-titré par Canvas.

Already as a little boy, actor Stefaan Degand was waving a baton on the coffee table, with the sound system at maximum volume. Almost all his life, he has dreamed of one day conducting Brahms’ Fourth Symphony, with an 80-strong orchestra, in a sold-out concert hall. 

That dream is now coming true. Stefaan has embarked on a musical journey of discovery for Canvas, in which he searches for the soul of Johannes Brahms. He has immersed himself in the score for a year and has learnt to master the finer points of a symphonic orchestra under the guidance of young conductor Pascale Van Os. In addition, Stefaan has met Brahms specialists and top international conductors such as Antony Hermus, principal conductor of the Belgian National Orchestra, and travelled to the Austrian village where Brahms completed his magnum opus in 1885. 

Stefan’s musical odyssey will be filmed by the filmmakers of Borgerhoff & Lamberigts and broadcast on Canvas in early 2024 in the series Maestro Degand. The series ends with a performance of Brahms’ Fourth Symphony in Bozar’s Henry Le Bœuf Hall, with the Belgian National Orchestra under the musical direction of Stefaan Degand. The concert will be captioned by Canvas
