The opera, premiered in Trieste in 1850, about the Protestant pastor Stiffelio, who, due to his wife Lina's infidelity, finds himself in a deep conflict between human lust for revenge and the Christian doctrine of forgiveness, can be described as Verdi's last youthful opera. It was an extraordinarily creative time; immediately afterwards the triad "Rigoletto" - "Il trovatore" - "La traviata" brought the master lasting world fame.
In "Stiffelio" there are arias and ensembles of the best Verdi quality to discover. The work's low profile can only be attributed to Franceso Maria Piave's rather simple libretto - a straightforwardly told story of a family conflict within a small faith community. But if one always judged an opera by its libretto, many a much-performed warhorse would have to disappear from the repertoire...
