Sun of the Incas, a work for soprano and chamber orchestra based on the poem Tropical Sun by Gabriela Mistral (1964), is a six-part cantata that marks the beginning of the highly successful international career of the Soviet composer Edison Vasilievich Denisov (1929-1996). A year after its 1964 premiere in Leningrad, now known as St. Petersburg, under the baton of Gennady Rozhdestvensky, it was performed in Darmstadt, at Warsaw Autumn and in Paris. Denisov composed in predefined series which he didn´t follow strictly, so within this work the world of strict rationality meets a contentually and emotionally tense humanistic message expressing the need for humanity to return to nature and its myths, which the author felt could protect the world from impending doom during the escalating Cold War and the beginnings of the war in Vietnam at the time of composition. It is not a coincidence that Denisov chose the poem Tropical Sun from the poetry collection Tala from 1938, thanks to which its author Gabriela Mistral became the first Latin American winner of the Nobel Prize for literature. 

At the beginning of the composition Capriccio for Left-Hand Piano, Flute (piccolo), Two Trumpets, Three Trombones and Tenor Tuba was the request of a pianist and war invalid named Otakar Hollman for a piano composition. At first, Leoš Janáček responded sharply and indiscriminately, in typical Janáček style, to the challenge of composing a piece for a one-handed player: Childish – what do you want to play with one hand? It is hard to dance for one with only one leg. However, when he heard the pianist play, he said that he would think about it again. Although Hollmann did not hold out much hope for a result, in actual fact a really brilliant composition was taking shape within Janáček’s mind. In the autumn of 1926 he completed his Capriccio for Left-Hand Piano and Wind Instruments and told Hollmann in a letter from 11. 11. 1926: I wrote Capriccio. You know, it was like out of spite, childish, to write for one hand. Other reasons and causes, both material and internal, were needed. When all of them arrived and met – then a work was created. And so one of the most remarkable chamber works of the 20th century was created. Hollmann performed the premiere of Capriccio on 2. 3. 1928 in the Smetana Hall of the Municipal House in Prague.  

The Concerto for Piano and Wind Instruments by Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) is one of the fundamental piano compositions of the 20th century. In 1920, Stravinsky moved from Switzerland to Paris, which was filled with the ideas of the neoclassical movement, which was fighting against the emotional disjointedness and systematic nature of Romanticism. In Paris, far from the Russian folk songs which initiated his first creative period, Stravinsky thought about a new conception for his work. In the Octet for Wind Instruments from 1921, and most notably in the Concerto for Piano and Wind Instruments that was completed in 1924, he returned to classical music from the times of Händel and Bach. However, he transformed it into a proper and original language built on an architecturally masterful, clean-sounding structure, as if carved from a single piece of material without unnecessary embellishment and gloss. The composition had its premiere in Paris in 1924, with the author at the piano. In 1950 Stravinsky partially revised the instrumentation of the work.  

Concerto buffo for chamber orchestra (1964) by Sergei Slonimsky (1932–2020), as the very name of the work suggests, is not lacking in wit and often ironic detachment. Slonimsky is full of musical ideas, though they are formally and precisely arranged into two gradually developing parts. The first of these, the Canonical Fugue, is constructed strictly rationally, while the second part, with the subtitle Improvisation, places significant emphasis on aleatoric elements that urge performers to develop thematic models through variations. In this way, the author infuses the sound of the ensemble with distinctive colour, spicing up the strictly defined melodic form. As a result, every performance offers new surprises. The composition had its premiere in Leningrad, now known as St. Petersburg, in 1966.

Slunce Inků pro soprán a komorní orchestr na slova básně Tropické slunce od Gabriely Mistral (1964) je šestidílná kantáta, která stojí na počátku veleúspěšné mezinárodní kariéry sovětského skladatele Edisona Vasiljeviče Denisova (1929–1996). Rok po premiéře v tehdejším Leningradu v roce 1964 pod taktovkou Gennadije Rožděstvenského byla provedena v Darmstadtu, na Varšavské jeseni i v Paříži. Denisov komponoval v předem daných sériích, jež však nepojímal striktně, a tak se v díle přirozeně střetává svět přísné racionality s obsahově a emočně vypjatým humanistickým poselstvím vyjadřujícím nutnost návratu lidstva k přírodě a jejím mýtům, které nás mohou ochránit před hrozící zkázou v době gradující studené války, ale i počínající války ve Vietnamu. Ne náhodou si pro jednu z prvních seriálních kompozic v Sovětském svazu vybral Denisov báseň Tropické slunce ze sbírky Pustina z roku 1938, díky níž se její autorka Gabriela Mistral stala vůbec první latinskoamerickou držitelkou Nobelovy ceny za literaturu. 

Na počátku vzniku skladby Capriccio pro klavír levou rukou, flétnu (pikolu), dvě trubky, tři trombóny a tenorovou tubu byla žádost klavíristy, válečného invalidy Otakara Hollmanna o klavírní skladbu. Leoš Janáček zprvu na výzvu zkomponovat skladbu pro jednorukého hráče zareagoval po janáčkovsku ostře a nevybíravě: Dětinské – co chcete hrát jednou rukou? Těžko tančit tomu, co má jen jednu nohu. Když však klavíristu slyšel hrát, pravil, že o tom ještě bude přemýšlet. Ačkoliv Hollmann v úspěch příliš nevěřil, v Janáčkovi zrála vpravdě geniální skladba. Na podzim roku 1926 dokončil své Capriccio pro klavír levou rukou a dechové nástroje a sdělil Hollmannovi v dopise z 11. 11. 1926: Napsal jsem Capriccio. Víte, jen pro jednu ruku psát, to byla schválnost až dětinská. Bylo třeba důvodů jiných a příčin věcných a vnitřních. Když se všechny dostavily a střetly – pak povstalo dílo. A tak vzniklo jedno z nejpozoruhodnějších komorních děl 20. století. Capriccio mělo premiéru v Hollmannově podání 2. 3. 1928 ve Smetanově síni Obecního domu v Praze.

Koncert pro klavír a dechové nástroje Igora Stravinského (1882–1971) patří k zásadním klavírním kompozicím 20. století. V roce 1920 se Stravinskij přestěhoval ze Švýcarska do Paříže, která byla naplněna myšlenkami neoklasického hnutí brojícího proti emoční rozpolcenosti a programovosti romantismu. Stravinskij byl v Paříži vzdálen od ruské lidové písně, která iniciovala jeho první tvůrčí období, a promýšlel novou koncepci své tvorby. V Oktetu pro dechové nástroje z roku 1921, a nejvýrazněji pak právě v Koncertu pro klavír a dechové nástroje, dokončeném v roce 1924, se vrací ke klasickému hudebnímu materiálu z dob Händela a Bacha. Ten však přetavuje do vlastního a svébytného jazyka postaveného na mistrné architektuře čisté znějící struktury jakoby vytesané z jednoho kusu materiálu bez zbytečných příkras a pozlátek. Skladba zazněla v premiéře v Paříži v roce 1924 s autorem u klavíru. V roce 1950 Stravinskij částečně zrevidoval instrumentaci díla. 

Concerto buffo pro komorní orchestr (1964) Sergeje Slonimského (1932–2020), jak již samotný název díla napovídá, nepostrádá vtip a mnohdy ironický nadhled. Slonimskij hýří hudebními nápady, které jsou však přísně formálně uspořádány do dvou postupně se rozvíjejících částí. První část, Kanonická fuga, je konstruována přísně racionálně, zatímco do druhé části s podtitulem Improvizace výrazně vstupují aleatorické prvky vyzývající interprety k variačnímu rozvíjení tematických modelů. Tímto postupem autor dosahuje svébytné barevnosti zvuku souboru, která dodává pikantnosti přísně danému melodickému tvaru. Každé provedení tak nabízí nová překvapení. Skladba měla premiéru v tehdejším Leningradu v roce 1966.

Die Sonne der Inkas für Sopran und Kammerorchester nach Worten des Gedichts Tropische Sonne von Gabriela Mistral (1964) ist eine sechsteilige Kantate, die am Beginn der überaus erfolgreichen internationalen Karriere des sowjetischen Komponisten Edisson Wassiljewitsch Denissow (1929–1996) steht. Ein Jahr nach seiner Premiere im damaligen Leningrad im Jahr 1964 unter der Leitung von Gennadi Roschdestwenski wurde das Werk in Darmstadt, beim Warschauer Herbst und in Paris aufgeführt. Denissow komponierte in vorgegebenen Serien, die er jedoch nicht strikt auffasste, und so stößt denn in dem Werk in natürlicher Weise die Welt der strengen Rationalität auf die inhaltlich und emotional zugespitzte humanistische Botschaft, welche die Notwendigkeit der Rückkehr der Menschheit zur Natur und ihren Mythen ausdrückt, die uns vor dem drohenden Verderben in einer Zeit des sich aufschaukelnden kalten Krieges, aber auch des beginnenden Kriegs in Vietnam retten können. Es ist kein Zufall, dass Denissow für eine der ersten seriellen Kompositionen in der Sowjetunion das Gedicht Tropische Sonne aus der von 1938 stammenden Sammlung Tala wählte, für die ihre Autorin Gabriela Mistral als erste Lateinamerikanerin überhaupt mit dem Nobelpreis für Literatur ausgezeichnet wurde. 

Am Beginn der Entstehung des Capriccio für Klavier linker Hand, Flöte (Pikkoloflöte), zwei Trompeten, drei Posaunen und Tenortuba stand das Ersuchen des kriegsversehrten Pianisten Otakar Hollmann, für ihn ein Klavierstück zu schreiben. Leoš Janáček reagierte auf das Ansinnen, ein Klavierwerk für einen einarmigen Spieler zu komponieren, zunächst in der von ihm gewohnten schroffen Art: Kindisch – was wollen Sie denn mit einer Hand spielen? Wer nur ein Bein hat, kann schwerlich tanzen. Als er den Pianisten jedoch hatte spielen hören, teilte er ihm mit, er werde noch darüber nachdenken. Während Hollmann kaum an einen Erfolg glauben mochte, reifte in Janáčeks Kopf eine wahrhaft geniale Komposition. Im Herbst 1926 vollendete er sein Capriccio für Klavier linker Hand und Bläser und teilte Hollmann in einem Brief vom 11. November 1926 mit: Ich habe ein Capriccio geschrieben. Wissen Sie, für nur eine Hand zu schreiben, das war ein geradezu kindischer Einfall. Es brauchte andere Gründe und sachliche innere Ursachen. Als alle zusammenfanden, da kam das Werk zustande. Und so entstand denn eines der bemerkenswertesten Kammerwerke des 20. Jahrhunderts. Das Capriccio wurde von Hollmann am 2. März 1928 im Smetana-Saal des Prager Repräsentationshauses uraufgeführt.

Das Konzert für Klavier und Bläser von Igor Strawinsky (1882–1971) zählt zu den grundlegenden Klavierwerken des 20. Jahrhunderts. Im Jahr 1920 war Strawinsky aus der Schweiz nach Paris gezogen, das erfüllt war von den Ideen einer neoklassischen Bewegung, die gegen die emotionale Zerrüttung und Programmhaftigkeit der Romantik anschrie. Strawinsky hatte in Paris keinen Kontakt zum russischen Volkslied, das seine erste Werkperiode initiiert hatte, und dachte über eine neue Konzeption für sein Schaffen nach. Im Oktett für Bläser aus dem Jahr 1921 und am deutlichsten gerade im 1924 vollendeten Konzert für Klavier und Bläser kehrt er zu klassischem Musikmaterial aus den Zeiten Händels und Bachs zurück. Dieses formt er jedoch um zu einer ganz eigenen Sprache, die auf der meisterhaften Architektur einer reinen, klingenden Struktur aufbaut, welche wie aus einem einzigen Stück Material gemeißelt erscheint, ohne überflüssigen Schmuck und Zierrat. Bei der Premiere 1924 in Paris saß der Autor selbst am Klavier. Im Jahr 1950 überarbeitete Strawinsky teilweise die Instrumentierung des Stücks. 

Dem Concerto buffo für Kammerorchester (1964) von Sergej Slonimski (1932–2020) fehlt es, wie sein Titel schon andeutet, nicht an Witz und vielfach auch ironischer Distanz. Slonimski sprüht vor musikalischen Einfällen, die jedoch streng formal in zwei sich schrittweise entwickelnde Teile gegliedert sind. Der erste Teil, die Kanonische Fuge, ist streng rational konstruiert, während in den zweiten Teil mit dem Untertitel Improvisation unübersehbare aleatorische Elemente Einzug halten, welche die Interpreten zu einer Entwicklung des thematischen Modells in Variationen herausfordern. Auf diese Weise erreicht der Autor eine eigenwillige Farbigkeit des Ensembleklangs, die der streng vorgegebenen melodischen Form zusätzliche Pikantheit verleiht. Jede Aufführung bietet daher neue Überraschungen. Die Komposition erlebte ihre Premiere im Jahr 1966 im damaligen Leningrad.
