Im Schaffen der australischen Klangkünstlerin Tamara Friebel spielt der Raum eine zentrale Rolle. Friebel studierte Komposition bei Chaya Czernowin sowie Architektur bei Zaha Hadid und ist derzeit als Post-Doc-Forscherin am Institut für Mathematik der Universität Graz beschäftigt. Illuminations entstand als Auftragswerk im Rahmen einer Kooperation des Festivals Imago Dei mit dem Carinthischen Sommer. Ausgangspunkt der Komposition war die Architektur der Minoritenkirche Krems: Friebel leitete die musikalischen Strukturen der Partitur aus den spezifischen Proportionen des Raumes ab und übersetzte sie in einen zwölfstimmigen Chor. Aus  Manifesten der jahrhundertealten Kirchenmauern destillierte sie latente Strukturen, die sie wiederum in manifestes Notenmaterial verwandelte. Textliches Leitmotiv ist dabei die Suche nach Licht und Erleuchtung, die in der Vertonung der Worte von Mystikerinnen wie Hildegard von Bingen oder Rābiʿa al-ʿAdawiyya al-Qaysiyya, von Mantras und Göttinnennamen zum Ausdruck kommt. Im März 2022 in der Minoritenkirche in Krems erstmals erklungen, wird das Werk mit einer auf die Stiftskirche Ossiach zugeschnittenen Ergänzung beim Carinthischen Sommer 2023 erneut zur Aufführung gebracht.

Space plays a central role in the work of the Australian sound artist Tamara Friebel. Friebel studied composition with Chaya Czernowin and architecture with Zaha Hadid and is currently employed as a post-doctoral researcher at the Institute for Mathematics at the University of Graz. Illuminationwas commissioned as part of a cooperation between the Imago Dei Festival and the Carinthian Summer. The starting point for the composition was the architecture of the Minorite Church in Krems: Friebel derived the musical structures of the score from the specific proportions of the room and translated them into a twelve-part choir. She distilled latent structures from the manifestos of the centuries-old church walls, which she in turn transformed into manifest sheet music. The lyrical leitmotif is the search for light and enlightenment, which is expressed in the setting of the words of mystics such as Hildegard von Bingen or Rābiʿa al-ʿAdawiyya al-Qaysiyya, of mantras and goddess names.
