The new season opens with Wagner's romantic opera Tannhäuser . With the redemption of an outsider through the love of a woman, Wagner took up themes in this work with which he struggled again and again throughout his artistic life up to Parsifal . Principal conductor Nicholas Carter takes over the musical direction, the staging comes from David Bobée. The sought-after Wagner tenor Marco Jentzsch worked with Daniel Barenboim, among others. In Klagenfurt he celebrates his debut in the role of Tannhäuser, Joo-Anne Bitter makes his debut as Elisabeth. The role of Venus is sung by Irene Roberts, who has appeared at the Metropolitan Opera in New York alongside Jonas Kaufmann in Parsifal .
Exuberant lust for life in the Venusberg, chaste minstrelsy in the Wartburg, body-destroying penance on the pilgrimage to Rome – Tannhäuser seeks the extremes of human existence, but is not spared from boredom. After years in the arms of Venus, the goddess of love, he seeks fulfillment in his spiritual love for Elisabeth. After a scandal at the song festival, he is expelled and, as a penitent, has to try to obtain the Pope's absolution. When he refuses her, an unearthly act of love seems to bring salvation. But even after this utopian happy ending, the stale feeling remains that there are more questions than answers.
