Telemann – Brockes-Passion
Oratorio / Orchestral
In the days of Georg Philipp Telemann, Passion music was played every year in European temples during the celebrations preceding Easter. It was conducive to spiritual contemplation accompanying the most important of the Christian holidays. As part of Wratislavia Cantans, we invite you to a unique performance of Brockes-Passion - the work will be performed in one of the oldest churches in Wrocław. The long tradition of Passion music is full of unique arrangements. This is evidenced by, for example, the impressive work of Telemann. Since taking up the function of cantor of the Evangelical Church of St. John in Hamburg, the composer wrote at least one passion every year. As a result, over forty of them were created. However, before he joined the Hamburg parish, he created the work Brockes-Passion , called by researchers the Passion Oratorio. The title of the work refers to the name of the Hamburg poet Barthold Heinrich Brockes. Telemann used in his composition his text entitled Der für die Sünde der Welt gemarterte und sterbende Jesuswhich is a verse paraphrase of all four Gospels. Brockes' work was extremely popular with composers at the time, and it was musically arranged many times, including by George Frideric Handel and Johann Mattheson. Johann Sebastian Bach also composed fragments of Brockes' work, creating several successful arias in this way. Compared to other studies, Telemann's work is distinguished by its contemplative character. It is also devoid of excessive emotionality, which is conducive to the reflection and prayer of the faithful. Brockes-Passion will sound with an international cast. The exceptional soloists and two choirs of the National Forum of Music will be accompanied by Il Giardino Armonico – one of the first Italian early music ensembles, operating continuously since 1985. The musicians will be led by the founder of Il Giardino Armonico and the artistic director of the Wratislavia Cantans International Festival, Giovanni Antonini – a renowned conductor and one of the best interpreters of early music.
