Requiem Mozart

A mysterious gentleman shows up at Mozart's and orders a death mass on behalf of an anonymous client. All communication and payment takes place through this third person, and for the terminally ill Mozart, it all appears both confusing and frightening.

It is even said that he thought he had been cursed and thus forced to write his own mass of death. Mozart writes much of the obituary while he himself is on his deathbed, and never manages to complete the work. It was eventually completed by Mozart's student Franz Süssmayr, who had received instructions from the dying Mozart.

Today we know that it was the skilled hobby musician Count Franz von Wazlsegg-Stuppach who was the commissioner of the work, and he must have wanted to publish it under his own name to honor his deceased wife. It took a decade before Mozart's widow persuaded him to announce that it was a requiem from Mozart's hand.

The story surrounding Mozart's requiem is mysterious and exciting, but it in no way surpasses the music itself. Despite the fact that Mozart never completed the work, it is without a doubt the music and tone of the ingenious Mozart that shines through when listening to this magnificent mass of death.
