One of the first chamber works to cast the cello as soloist rather than mere supplier of bass-line accompaniment, Beethoven’s Second Cello Sonata was written on a 1786 visit to the Berlin court of King Friedrich Wilhelm II, for virtuoso court cellist Jean-Pierre Duport to perform with Beethoven himself. A darkly dramatic slow introduction, playing to the cello’s lyricism, leads to a resolute Allegro molto più tosto making much of Beethoven’s own virtuosity; the finale is then a playful rondo. Debussy’s classically-proportioned Cello Sonata of 1915 – his first chamber work since the String Quartet of 1893 – opens on a dark and heartfelt Prologue, before an elfin Sérénade and a triumphant Finale. Grieg’s 1883 Cello Sonata shares its A minor key with his Piano Concerto, echoes of which are heard in the concluding Allegro. Preceding that are a dramatic Allegro agitato and a lyrical Andante molto tranquillo.

La deuxième sonate pour violoncelle de Beethoven, l’une des premières œuvres de chambre qui a attribué au violoncelle un rôle de soliste, a été écrite en 1786 lors de la visite à la cour berlinoise du roi Friedrich Wilhelm II. Elle était destinée à permettre au violoncelliste virtuose de la cour, Jean-Pierre Duport, de jouer avec Beethoven lui-même. Une introduction lente sombrement dramatique, jouant sur le lyrisme du violoncelle, mène à un Allegro molto più tosto résolu qui fait la part belle à la virtuosité de Beethoven lui-même. Le finale prend ensuite la forme d’un rondo enjoué. La Sonate pour violoncelle de Debussy de 1915 marque son retour à la musique de chambre depuis son Quatuor à cordes de 1893. Elle commence par un Prologue sombre et sincère. Suivi par une merveilleuse Sérénade elle se conclut par un Finale triomphant. La Sonate pour violoncelle de 1883 de Grieg partage sa tonalité de la mineur avec son Concerto pour piano, dont on entend des échos dans l’Allegro final. Celui-ci est précédé d’un Allegro agitato dramatique et d’un Andante molto tranquillo lyrique.
