Who doesn't know the eerie legend of the Pied Piper of Hamelin, who freed the city from a plague of rats with his flute playing and finally kidnapped all the children out of anger at the citizens' refusal to pay. So far, so traditional. But what happened before? Who was this mysterious Pied Piper?

The Northern Irish composer Conor Mitchell explores this question in his children's horror opera "The Musician" by devising a dark and enigmatic prehistory: A mysterious musician arrives in the city and bequeaths the gift of music to an orphan.
Lo and behold, the boy has a special talent for playing the flute. Soon everyone will be dancing to his tune – in the truest sense of the word. But when a girl treats the boy cruelly and breaks a promise made to him, his initial goodwill turns to hatred. From then on, the boy uses his talent to take revenge on his fellow human beings...

It's a story about friendship, trust and jealousy, about the gift of a special talent and about the power of music. In his opera, Conor Mitchell brings together a chilling soundtrack and an epic narrative. With his dark, shrill and at times unsettling composition he creates a mysterious and mystical aura.

Commissioned by Northern Ireland children's theater company Cahoots NI, The Musician premiered in 2021 at the Arts Center Belfast to great acclaim. Like his music theater project "Abomination", the opera "Our Day" and the chorale "Shadowtime", "The Musician" also ranks between forms of total theater and contemporary musicals.

Wer kennt sie nicht, die unheimliche Sage des Rattenfängers von Hameln, der die Stadt mit seinem Flötenspiel von einer Rattenplage befreite und schließlich aus Ärger über die Zahlungsverweigerung der Bürger*innen sämtliche Kinder entführte. So weit, so traditionell. Aber was geschah zuvor? Wer war dieser mysteriöse Rattenfänger?

Dieser Frage spürt der nordirische Komponist Conor Mitchell in seiner Kinder-Gruseloper „The Musician“ nach, indem er eine dunkle und rätselhafte Vorgeschichte ersinnt: Ein geheimnisvoller Musiker gelangt in die Stadt und vermacht einem Waisenkind das Geschenk der Musik.
Und siehe da, der Junge hat ein besonderes Talent im Flötenspiel. Schon bald tanzen alle nach seiner Pfeife – im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes. Doch als ein Mädchen den Jungen grausam behandelt und ein ihm gegebenes Versprechen bricht, schlägt sein anfängliches Wohlwollen in Hass um. Fortan nutzt der Junge sein Talent, um sich an seinen Mitmenschen zu rächen …

Es ist eine Geschichte über Freundschaft, Vertrauen und Eifersucht, über die Gabe eines besonderen Talents und über die Kraft der Musik. Conor Mitchell lässt in seiner Oper Grusel-Soundtrack und epische Erzählung aufeinandertreffen. Mit seiner düsteren, schrillen und zuweilen beunruhigenden Komposition schafft er eine geheimnisvoll-mystische Aura.

„The Musician“ wurde von dem nordirischen Kindertheater Cahoots N I in Auftrag gegeben und feierte 2021 im Arts Center Belfast seine erfolgreiche Streaming-Uraufführung. Wie sein Musik­theaterprojekt „Abomination“, die Oper „Our Day” und der Choral „Shadowtime” reiht sich „The Musician“ dabei ebenso zwischen Formen des Totalen Theaters und dem zeitgenössischen Musical ein.
