La Resurrezione – an intense and dramatic scandal

Lars Ulrik Mortensen and Concerto Copenhagen present Handel's scandal-ridden oratorio in Trinitatis before the orchestra takes it on to Vienna. 



At the beginning of the 18th century, the Pope put a ban on opera throughout Rome. Only 23-year-old GF Handel defied the papal ban with his oratorio La Resurrezione (The Resurrection), which premiered at the Palazzo Ruspoli in Rome on Easter Sunday 1708, conducted by the legendary violinist Arcangelo Corelli.

The barely concealed attempt to circumvent the papal ban, the use of female singers and the manifestation of controversial biblical characters in music, made the performance a pure scandal. A scandal which, of course, only made the young Handel even more famous.

La Resurrezione describes in a dramatic, intense and liturgical way the events from Jesus' crucifixion and death on Good Friday to the resurrection on Easter Sunday.

Here we meet a handful of dramatized biblical characters; Mary Magdalene, Mary the wife of Clopas, John the Baptist, an angel – and not least the fallen angel, Lucifer, Satan himself.

The extremely demanding oratorio is performed by specially selected, international vocal soloists, and Concerto Copenhagen plays under the direction of Lars Ulrik Mortensen.



The concert in Trinitatis is the only chance to hear the concert in Denmark before Concerto Copenhagen goes to Vienna and performs the work in the Wiener Konzerthaus.

La Resurrezione – en intens og dramatisk skandale

Lars Ulrik Mortensen og Concerto Copenhagen præsenterer Händels skandaleombruste oratorium i Trinitatis inden orkesteret tager dét med videre Wien. 



I starten af 1700-tallet satte paven et forbud i mod opera i hele Rom. Den kun 23-årige G. F. Händel udfordrede pavens forbud med sit oratorium La Resurrezione (Genopstandelsen), som blev uropført på Palazzo Ruspoli i Rom, påskesøndag 1708, under ledelse af den legendariske violinist Arcangelo Corelli.

Det slet skjulte forsøg på at forbigå det pavelige forbud, brugen af kvindelige sangere og manifestationen af kontroversielle bibelske karakterer i musik, gjorde opførelsen til en ren skandale. En skandale, som selvfølgelig kun gjorde den unge Händel endnu mere berømt.

La Resurrezione beskriver på dramatisk, intenst og liturgisk vis begivenhederne fra Jesu korsfæstelse og død langfredag til genopstandelsen påskesøndag.

Her møder vi en håndfuld dramatiserede bibelske karakterer; Maria Magdalena, Klopas Hustru Maria, Johannes Døberen, en engel – og ikke mindst den faldne engel, Lucifer, Satan selv.

Det yderst krævende oratorium bliver fremført af særlig udvalgte, internationale vokalsolister, og Concerto Copenhagen spiller under ledelse af Lars Ulrik Mortensen.



Koncerten i Trinitatis er eneste chance af høre koncerten i Danmark, inden Concerto Copenhagen tager til Wien og opfører værket i Wiener Konzerthaus.
