In this opera, the composer refers to Pushkin's famous fairy tale. Familiar to us from childhood fairy-tale images - Tsar Saltan, Tsarevich Gvidon, Militrisa, Baba Babarikha, the beautiful Swan Princess, Bumblebee - received expressive musical characteristics from Rimsky-Korsakov.

"The Tale of Tsar Saltan" by Rimsky-Korsakov always inspires directors to make fantastic decisions. For example, in the Kuibyshev performance of 1959, staged by the chief director of the theater Anatoly Picard, the design was done in the aesthetics of the Palekh box - for this, a team of Palekh masters was specially invited to the theater under the guidance of the honored art worker Nikolai Parilov. In total, in the history of SATOB, The Tale of Tsar Saltan was staged six times: in the very first season of 1931/32, in 1933, 1955, 1959, 1987 and 2013 - and more and more turned from a politicized fantasy for adults into a children's fairy tale.

The current production uses the most modern technical means: 3D video content allows viewers to see the Flight of the Bumblebee, the city of Ledenets, and a kite attacking the beautiful fairytale Swan Princess. The opera has been adapted for family viewing due to some reduction in musical material, but the main storylines and musical images of The Tale of Tsar Saltan have been preserved.
