The wife

Ben wants to propose marriage to his friend Lucy in her apartment. But every time he answers, the phone rings and Lucy picks it up. So he has no choice but to leave Lucy's apartment, go to the nearest phone booth and from there to bring his request forward.

A woman has been abandoned by her partner. Now she speaks to him on the phone and tries desperately to save the relationship after all. She tries to use the manipulative possibilities of media communication for her own purposes: first she plays the strong, then she refers to the allegedly happy past she shared and finally she threatens to commit suicide.

First performed at the Paris Opéra-comique in 1959, The Human Voice demonstrates that media communication cannot replace real communication. Francis Poulenc's (1899-1963) moving literary opera based on the play of the same name by Jean Cocteau is regularly on the repertoire of opera houses. Gian Carlo Menotti's (1911-2007) Opera buffa, premiered in New York in 1947, is also a classic.
