Entre fantômes et fantasmes, un huis clos hallucinatoire, aux atmosphères oppressantes, où les non-dits pèsent d’un poids toujours plus lourd: le quatrième des sept opéras de Britten est sans conteste l’un des plus fascinants.

Inspiré par une célèbre nouvelle de Henry James publiée en 1898, The Turn of the Screw met en scène les souvenirs d’une gouvernante anonyme, engagée par un invisible tuteur pour succéder à une certaine Miss Jessel, morte depuis peu dans des circonstances inexpliquées, afin de veiller sur deux jeunes enfants, Miles et Flora. Peu à peu, il apparaît que la demeure, isolée dans la campagne anglaise, est hantée par Miss Jessel ainsi que par une deuxième figure non moins inquiétante: celle de feu Peter Quint, qui fut son amant. Que viennent-ils faire auprès des enfants? Pourquoi cherchent-ils à les attirer à l’écart? Les fantômes existent-ils? Entre l’étrange et le merveilleux s’ouvre un intervalle indécidable, aussi étroit qu’artistiquement fécond – la fissure du fantastique, qui est, selon la définition qu’en donne Tsvetan Todorov, « l’hésitation éprouvée par un être qui ne connaît que les lois naturelles, face à un événement en apparence surnaturel ». Britten, avec une étonnante économie de moyens porte à son paroxysme l’« inquiétante étrangeté» de James.

Between ghosts and fantasies, a hallucinatory camera, with oppressive atmospheres, where the unsaid weigh ever heavier: the fourth of Britten's seven operas is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating.

Inspired by a famous short story by Henry James published in 1898, The Turn of the Screwdepicts the memories of an anonymous governess, hired by an invisible guardian to succeed a certain Miss Jessel, who died recently in unexplained circumstances, in order to watch over two young children, Miles and Flora. Gradually, it appears that the house, isolated in the English countryside, is haunted by Miss Jessel as well as by a second no less disturbing figure: that of the late Peter Quint, who was her lover. What are they doing with the children? Why are they trying to lure them away? Do ghosts exist? Between the strange and the marvelous an undecidable gap opens up, as narrow as it is artistically fertile – the fissure of the fantastic, which is, according to the definition given by Tsvetan Todorov, "the hesitation felt by a being who does not know that natural laws, in the face of a seemingly supernatural event. Britten, with an astonishing economy of means, brings James' "disturbing strangeness" to its climax.
