Rustam Sagdiev (b. 1990) has been a soloist with the Academy of Young Opera Singers of the Mariinsky Theater since 2011. The audience could see him in the role of Mack in Tikhon Khrennikov's opera The Giant Boy, Bastien in Mozart's singspiel Bastien and Bastienne, Nikolenka in Scenes from the Life of Nikolenka Irteniev by Sergei Banevich and in other chamber operas that take place in the Hall Prokofiev at the Mariinsky-2.
Having a great performing experience, Sagdiev decided to try his hand as a composer. The Turnip is his first opera. The idea of ​​its creation belongs to the artistic director of the Academy of Young Opera Singers of the Mariinsky Theater Larisa Gergieva. She invited the young composer to write a children's opera on a Russian theme, the folklore of which would be manifested not only in music, but also in texts and in the plot.
“The main material of the opera is songs from different regions of Russia, somewhat stylized, modified, but still recognizable. In a sense, this opera can be called a reader of Russian folklore for children,” says the composer.
Small additions were made to the plot of a familiar fairy tale to everyone from childhood. In addition to the main characters, Berezonka, Liponka and Osinushka, Nightingale and Skomorokh, who will be the narrator, will take the stage. Among the tools used by the author are a triangle, a box, spoons, a rattle and a balalaika.

Рустам Сагдиев (р. 1990) является солистом Академии молодых оперных певцов Мариинского театра с 2011 года. Зрители могли видеть его в роли Мака в опере Тихона Хренникова «Мальчик-великан», Бастьена – в зингшпиле Моцарта «Бастьен и Бастьенна», Николеньки – в «Сценах из жизни Николеньки Иртеньева» Сергея Баневича и в других камерных операх, которые идут в Зале Прокофьева в Мариинском-2.
Имея большой исполнительский опыт, Сагдиев решил попробовать свои силы в качестве композитора. «Репка» – его первая опера. Идея ее создания принадлежит художественному руководителю Академии молодых оперных певцов Мариинского театра Ларисе Гергиевой. Она предложила молодому композитору написать детскую оперу на русскую тему, фольклорность которой проявлялась бы не только в музыке, но и в текстах, и в сюжете.
«Основной материал оперы – это песни из разных регионов России, несколько стилизованные, видоизмененные, но все равно узнаваемые. В каком-то смысле эту оперу можно назвать хрестоматией русского фольклора для детей», – говорит композитор.
В сюжет всем с детства знакомой сказки были внесены небольшие дополнения. Помимо основных персонажей на сцену выйдут Березонька, Липонька и Осинушка, Соловушко и Скоморох, который будет рассказчиком. Среди инструментов, использованных автором, треугольник, коробочка, ложки, трещотка и балалайка.
