A zeppelin, nuclear tests and the cloned sheep Dolly are at the center of Steve Reich's and Beryl Korot's ›Three Tales‹ video opera.

Three Tales - three stories:

1. A gigantic zeppelin crosses the Atlantic. During the landing near New York, it bursts into flames and becomes a symbol of the technical hubris of the 20th century.

2. American forces conduct nuclear tests on Bikini Atoll, rendering the islands permanently uninhabitable.

3. Dolly the sheep is the first cloned mammal. When Dolly dies at just 6 years old, she is showing signs of aging that scientists attribute to the sheep being derived from the cell of an adult animal.

›Three Tales‹ by Steve Reich is a groundbreaking work from the late 20th century that breaks new ground both in terms of content and form. The performances of the Wuppertal Opera make the opera directly tangible in an installation situation with the audience on stage.

Ein Zeppelin, Atomtests und das Klonschaf Dolly stehen im Zentrum der ›Three Tales‹ von Steve Reichs und Beryl Korots Video-Oper.

Three Tales – drei Geschichten:

1. Ein gigantischer Zeppelin überquert den Atlantik. Während der Landung bei New York geht er in Flammen auf und wird zu einem Symbol für die technische Hybris des 20. Jahrhunderts.

2. Auf dem Bikini-Atoll führen die amerikanischen Streitkräfte Atomtests durch, die die Inseln dauerhaft unbewohnbar machen.

3. Das Schaf Dolly ist das erste geklonte Säugetier. Als Dolly im Alter von nur 6 Jahren stirbt, weist sie Alterserscheinungen auf, die Wissenschaftler darauf zurückführen, dass das Schaf aus der Zelle eines erwachsenen Tieres stammt.

›Three Tales‹ von Steve Reich ist ein bahnbrechendes Werk des ausgehenden 20. Jahrhunderts, das sowohl inhaltlich als auch formal eigenständig neue Wege beschreitet. Die Aufführungen der Oper Wuppertal machen die Oper in einer Installations-Situation mit dem Publikum auf der Bühne unmittelbar erlebbar.
