One of the most famous and most performed operas in the history of music - "Tosca" by Giacomo Puccini has a fascinating history from the conception of the idea to its realization, as well as an equally interesting history of productions on the Lviv stage.

For the first time, Puccini approached the idea of ​​writing the opera "Tosca" based on the drama of the same name by the French playwright Victorien Sardou (1831-1908), which was extremely popular at the time on the theater stage, back in 1889. At that time, the 30-year-old composer had only two opera premieres under his belt - his early and lesser-known operas "Willis" and "Edgar". The young composer's talent was supported primarily by the head of the publishing house, Giulio Ricordi, who provided Puccini with a monthly subsidy, which he mentioned in a letter to his mother after his first success: "I came to the theater with 40 centimes in my pocket. That was all I had.... In my usual dark brown suit, which was my whole wardrobe, I had to go out before the curtain, where I was greeted with a standing ovation.... In a few days Ricordi acquired the rights to publish "Willis" and handed me my first 1,000 lire ". Subsequently, Ricordi fully compensated for these expenses, becoming a world monopolist in the printing and distribution of the composer's works. For Puccini himself, the publisher became not only a patron, but also a faithful adviser throughout his life.

So, having received the first triumphs, royalties and support of Ricordi, Giacomo Puccini sought to write his next opera precisely on the plot of "Tosca". To get permission from the author of the play, he turned to his patron: "It is in "Tosca" that I see an opera that is completely suitable for me: without burdens, which provides the basis for a spectacular performance and great opportunities in the use of music."

But the plan for the implementation of "Tosca" had to be postponed for a whole decade, during that time implementing two other masterpieces - the operas "Manon Lescaut" and "Bohème". They not only brought Puccini world fame, but also became those mature works in which the composer found his author's style - in musical means, as well as in drama, not succumbing to the "fashionable" trends of writing one-act veric dramas at the time. 

After the successful premiere of La Bohème, while this opera was making its way to European stages, Puccini was completely enthralled with the idea of ​​performing Tosca. Having missed the traditional autumn hunt, he specially went to Florence to see this theater play with the famous Sarah Bernard as Floria Tosca. The play was written for this actress. With the help of Ricordi, the composer settled some more formalities: Puccini managed to terminate the publisher's contract to write an opera based on the plot of "Tosca" with the composer Alberto Franchetti.

The last obstacle was the permission from the author of the drama Viktorien Sardu himself. However, after the composer, together with the librettists Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa (who previously worked together on the libretto of "Bohemia"), worked on the libretto of "Tosca", the plot of which became fast and dynamic, Puccini personally met with the author of the drama in Paris and agreed correction of the libretto (very skillfully rejecting the author's demand to receive a large percentage of the performance of the opera).

Such was the long way from the birth of the very idea of ​​writing to the creation of music for "Tosca".

Puccini worked on this opera from June 1898 to September 1899. The premiere of the opera took place in Rome on January 14, 1900 at the Constanta theater under the baton of the conductor Leopoldo Munone. The famous Romanian singer Hariclea Darkle sang in Tosca's part. Since the action of the opera takes place in Rome, Ricordi contributed to the fact that the premiere took place in this city.

Historical events are really important in the unfolding of the plot of both the opera and the drama "Tosca".

The action of the opera takes place in Rome in 1800 (the exact dates are even indicated in the drama - June 17-18). For a long time, Italy was divided into numerous independent lands and cities, for example, in Rome, the government was in the hands of the Pope. In 1798, thanks to Napoleon's army, a Republic was established in Rome, which was ruled by seven consuls (one of the consuls was Libero Angelucci, who could be the prototype of the opera character Cesare Angelotti). A year later, the French troops left Rome, which was occupied by the troops of the Neapolitan kingdom. The plot of "Tosca" unfolds against the background of the events when Napoleon once again introduced his troops into Italy, and was close to defeat (at the beginning of the second act, the victory over the French is celebrated in the Farnese Palace), but closer to the evening, Napoleon did win, and the Neapolitans left the city.

Одна із найвідоміших і найбільш виконуваних опер в історії музики – «Тоска» Джакомо Пуччіні має захоплюючу історію від зародження ідеї до її втілення, а також не менш цікаву історію постановок на львівській сцені.

Вперше до ідеї написання опери «Тоска» за однойменною драмою французького драматурга Вікторієна Сарду (1831-1908), що була на той час надзвичайно популярною на театральній сцені, Пуччіні звернувся ще у 1889 році. Тоді 30-річний композитор мав за плечима лише дві оперні прем’єри – його ранніх і менш відомих опер «Вілліси» та «Едгар». Талант молодого композитора підтримував насамперед голова видавничого дому Джуліо Рікорді, забезпечивши Пуччіні щомісячною субсидією, про що той згадував у листі до матері після свого першого успіху: «Я прийшов до театру з 40 сантимами у кишені. Це було все, що я мав… В буденному темно-коричневому костюмі, що складав увесь мій гардероб, мені довелося вийти перед завісою, де мене зустріли оваціями… За кілька днів Рікорді придбав право на видання «Віллісів» і вручив мені мої перші 1000 лір». Згодом ці витрати Рікорді цілком компенсував, ставши світовим монополістом у друці та розповсюдженні творів композитора. Для самого Пуччіні видавець став не лише покровителем, але й вірним порадником впродовж життя.

Отож, отримавши перші тріумфи, гонорари та підтримку Рікорді, Джакомо Пуччіні прагнув написати свою наступну оперу саме на сюжет «Тоски». Щоб отримати дозвіл від автора п’єси, він звернувся до свого покровителя:  «Саме в «Тосці» я бачу оперу, що цілком підходить для мене: без тяглостей, що дає основу для ефектного спектаклю і великі можливості у використанні музики».

Але задум щодо втілення «Тоски» довелося відкласти на ціле десятиріччя, втілюючи за той час два інші шедеври – опери «Манон Лєско» та «Богема». Вони не лише принесли Пуччіні світову славу, але й стали тими зрілими творами, у яких композитор віднайшов свій авторський стиль – у музичних засобах, а також у драматургії, не піддаючись «модним» на той час тенденціям написання одноактних вериських драм. 

Після успішної прем’єри «Богеми», доки ця опера пробивала шлях на європейські сцени, Пуччіні був повністю захоплений ідеєю щодо втілення «Тоски». Пропустивши традиційне осіннє полювання, він спеціально поїхав до Флоренції, щоб побачити цю театральну п’єсу зі славетною Сарою Бернар у ролі Флорії Тоски. Для цієї актриси п’єса і була написана. За допомогою Рікорді, композитор залагодив ще деякі формальності: Пуччіні домігся розірвання контракту видавця на написання опери на сюжет «Тоски» з композитором Альберто Франкетті.

Останньою перепоною став дозвіл від самого автора драми Вікторієна Сарду. Однак після того, як композитор разом з лібретистами Луїджі Іллікою та Джузеппе Джакоза (які працювали перед тим спільно над лібрето «Богеми») здійснили опрацювання лібрето «Тоски», сюжет якої став стрімким та динамічним, Пуччіні особисто зустрівся у Парижі з автором драми і погодив корекцію лібрето (дуже вміло відхиливши вимогу автора отримувати великий відсоток від виконання опери).

Таким був довгий шлях від зародження самої ідеї написання до створення музики до «Тоски».

Пуччіні працював над цією оперою впродовж червня 1898 – вересня 1899 року. Прем’єра опери відбулася у Римі 14 січня 1900 року в театрі «Констанці» під орудою диригента Леопольдо Муньоне. У партії Тоски співала славетна румунська співачка Харіклея Даркле. Оскільки дія опери розгортається у Римі, Рікорді посприяв тому, щоб саме у цьому місті відбулася прем’єра.

Історичні події й справді мають важливе значення у розгортанні сюжету і опери, і драми «Тоска».

Дія опери відбувається у Римі 1800 році (у драмі навіть вказані точні дати – 17-18 червня).
