Superstar Anja Harteros shines in the title role of Michael Sturminger's cinematic production of Giacomo Puccini's Tosca, the centerpiece of the 2018 Salzburg Easter Festival. Puccini's "melodramma" Tosca, which premiered to great acclaim in 1900, is a political thriller with a heartbreaking love story that vividly chronicles the threats faced by artists, political persecution, torture, arbitrary executions and war - with exceptional attention to detail, which was showcased at the Easter Festival is brought to the stage in Salzburg. How the German star soprano Anja Harteros reveals the heart of Floria Tosca, how she differentiates the nuances of Tosca's feelings is "unique in the world" (Der Standard). The stunning sets by Renate Martin and Andreas Donhauser are extremely impressive recreations of the original locations, such as Sant'Andrea della Valle with the towering columns or Scarpia's elegant study in the Palazzo Farnese with the monumental frescoes by the Mannerist painter Francesco Salviati, but interspersed with subtle references the present like flickering neon signs or an exercise bike. Since Christian Thielemann took over in 2013, the Staatskapelle Dresden has been the orchestra of the Easter Festival. The Maestro leads his fabulous musicians as well as the combined voices of the Salzburg Bach Choir and the Salzburg Festival and the Theater Children's Choir "with technical self-confidence.... in this gripping, rousing, clearly focused musical theatre".
