C'est en 1911 que Scott Joplin se lance dans la composition de l'opéra Treemonisha. L'œuvre emmène l'auditeur au cœur d’une communauté d’anciens esclaves. L'ignorance y prospère entretenue par des sorciers oppresseurs. Parmi eux se détache Treemonisha, seule femme instruite au sein du groupe. Elle souhaite sauver ses semblables grâce à l’instruction qui les amènera à la liberté. Aussi encourage-t-elle l'écoute, la sagesse et la paix. Mêlant, jazz, ragtime et influence européenne, la partition s'impose comme un puissant plaidoyer musical contre l'obscurantisme.

It was in 1911 that Scott Joplin began composing the opera Treemonisha . The work takes the listener to the heart of a community of former slaves. Ignorance prospers there, maintained by oppressive sorcerers. Among them stands out Treemonisha , the only educated woman in the group. She wants to save her fellows through education that will lead them to freedom. It also encourages listening, wisdom and peace. Mixing jazz, ragtime and European influence, the score stands out as a powerful musical plea against obscurantism.
