Офіційний тизер до прем'єри опери «Турандот» Джакомо Пуччіні. До 120-річчя театру, Львівська національна опера презентує цю виставу вперше за свою історію.Ем...

До 120-річчя Львівської національної опери, вперше в історії театру та на Львівській театральний сцені загалом, поставлена опера «Турандот» – останній твір славетного італійського композитора Джакомо Пуччіні.

Опери «Манон Леско», «Богема», «Мадам Баттерфляй», «Тоска» принесли Джакомо Пуччіні світову славу як неповторного лірика, який тонко втілював психологічні нюанси своїх героїв, а зокрема, центральних персонажів – ніжних, закоханих, тендітних та мужніх у своїх почуттях жінок.

Ще за життя композитора його опери йшли на провідних сценах світу, а він – елегантний красень, який захоплювався автомобілями – користувався великою популярністю. У своїх операх він ніколи не зраджував істині: найголовніше – це чарівність мелодії, вишуканість та краса співу, відкидаючи новітні модерні явища у музичному мистецтві – нівелювання мелодики і тональної гармонії. «В Італії раніше співали, а тепер – ні!», – стверджував Пуччіні, – «Лише удари, дисонансні акорди, фальшива експресія, прозорість, плинність, безколірність».

У 1918 році композитор закінчив три одноактні опери – триптих «Сестра Анжеліка», «Плащ» та «Джанні Скіккі», і шукав сюжет для нового твору. Його привабила  п’єса, яка на той час ішла на німецькій сцені  – «Турандот» Фрідріха Шиллера у постановці Макса Райнгардта. На італійській сцені трагікомічна казка про китайську Принцесу вперше постала в творчості драматурга Карло Гоцці, який звернувся до джерел ХІІ століття – повісті азербайджанського поета Нізамі. Про це композитор згадує у листі до лібретиста Ренато Сімоні у березні 1920 року, а також додає:

«Дорогий Сімоні, я прочитав «Турандот», мені здається, що не варто відмовлятися від цього сюжету. … Але його потрібно спростити – скоротити число дій і опрацювати – зробити більш гнучким, дієвим, і найголовніше – розпалити любовну пристрасть Турандот, яку вона стільки часу гасила під попелом своєї великої гордині» (Джакомо Пуччіні, лист до Ренато Сімоні, 18 березня 1920 року). 

З цього часу починається активна робота над лібрето разом із Джузеппе Адамі, який працював разом з Пуччіні над попередніми його операми – «Ластівка» і «Плащ», та відомим драматургом та критиком Ренато Сімоні. На жаль, через зайнятість лібретистів над іншими проєктами, робота йшла аж надто повільно, чим у численних листах дорікав композитор:

«Моя туга, я б сказав – майже страждання від байдикування і бажання працювати над тираном-Принцесою – щодня стають більшими. Пам’ятаю, що був серпень, коли ми говорили про сценарій! А через двадцять днів вже Різдво! … Я не дорікаю, але якщо б мої слова мали вістря, то ти, породистий коню, відчув би, що твої боки поколені шпорами» (Джакомо Пуччіні, лист до Ренато Сімоні, 4 грудня 1920 року).

Непередбачувано для композитора, який із великим ентузіазмом працював над лібрето, підшукуючи характерні китайські теми, робота над оперою розтягнулася на довгі чотири роки. Бракувало останнього любовного дуету Турандот і Калафа, текст якого Пуччіні постійно не задовільняв:

«Мені хочеться, щоб він був людяним; адже коли говорить серце, в Китаї відбувається дія, чи в Голландії, почуття завжди одні і ті ж, й прагнення у всіх – однакові» (Джакомо Пуччіні, лист до Ренато Сімоні, 25березня 1924 року).

Пуччіні якомога швидше намагався завершити оперу (прем’єра вже була призначена на квітень 1925 року), однак його самопочуття погіршувалося, і врешті, восени необхідна була операція на горлі.

«Я страждаю, як Христос, розп’ятий на хресті!» (Джакомо Пуччіні, лист до друга Анджоліно Магріні, листопад 1924 року).

В лікарню Брюсселя Пуччіні взяв із собою найцінніше – ескізи фінального дуету та хору опери «Турандот», які так і не зміг завершити: серце композитора не витримало ускладнень після операції і зупинилося 29 листопада 1924 року. Призначена за життя композитора прем’єра його останнього твору – опери «Турандот» була скасована.

Отож останнє що встиг завершити Пуччіні – це сцена смерті рабині Лю, її жертовного вчинку заради кохання до Калафа. На сцені Львівської національної опери у постановці польського режисера Міхала Знанецького та диригента Івана Чередніченка прозвучить саме такий фінал – оригінальна версія композитора.

Та після смерті Пуччіні, завершити оперу «Турандот» за його ескізами взявся учень композитора Франко Альфано у співпраці з диригентом Артуро Тосканіні, який погодився диригувати прем’єрою на прохання Пуччіні ще за його життя. Був доданий любовний дует та щаслива кінцівка: любов до Невідомого Принца у серці Турандот зародилася разом зі світанком – більше не буде жорстоких страт, у новий день всі славлять перемогу кохання.

Чи був Тосканіні задоволений фіналом опери залишається загадкою: як відомо він тонко відчував творчість Пуччіні, а сам композитор глибоко цінував його виконання та інтерпретацію власних творів. Фактом залишається те, що на прем’єрному виконанні опери «Турандот», що відбулося у міланському театрі «Ла Скала» 25 квітня 1926 року, Тосканіні опустив диригентську паличку та зупинив оркестр рівно на тому місці – оплакування жертви рабині Лю – на якому «смерть вирвала перо із рук композитора». Завершена Альфано опера із любовним дуетом та фіналом була представлена лише наступного дня, ймовірно, вже без участі Тосканіні.

Тож опера «Турандот» становить нерозв’язану загадку – яким мав бути фінал опери? Чи жертва Лю та поцілунок Калафа розтопили кригу серця Турандот?… Смерть композитора залишила чимало таємниць стосовно цього твору, рівно ж як загадками наповнений сюжет цієї казки.

Екзотичне звучання легендарного Китаю в опері проявляється через колористичні знахідки в мелодиці та гармонії, барвисту партитуру оркестру та епічні, масштабні хорові епізоди. Вони слугують фоном для розгортання сюжету і відображення характерів героїв з їхніми людськими пристрастями і бажаннями: Принца Калафа, його батька Тимура і двох протилежних жіночих образів – холодної та неприступної Турандот та ніжної і покірної рабині Лю. Саркастично-гострими, навіть жорстокими, є імператорські радники – Пінг, Понг і Панг, персонажі яких походять від масок-веселунів італійської ярмаркової комедії «дель арте». У постановці Львівської національної опери є чимало балетних сцен – як от соло Принца Персії – першої жертви кохання до Турандот. Балетмейстер опери – Діана Теохарідіс, яка творила постановку танців онлайн, у співпраці з репетитором балету Ігорем Храмовим, а також асистентами із Греції – Стратосом Мпапагіанакісом та Константіносом Кафандарісом.

У сценографії та образах хору важливе значення має втілення скам’янілої теракотової армії – легендарного імператорського війська, що покликане захищати державу як і в реальному світі, так і в позаземному. Закам’янілі китайські солдати не проявляють співчуття до страчених царевичів, і лише смерть Лю пробуджує у них почуття – а отже життя.

Це не вперше композитор захоплюється екзотикою далеких країв – у його попередніх операх «Мадам Баттерфляй» дія відбувається в Японії, в опері «Дівчина із Заходу» – на американському Дикому Заході. Цього разу Пуччіні був зачарований казковим Пекіном. Втеча подалі від Європи у міраж екзотичного Сходу, світ казкових оповідей про засліплюючу красу Принцеси й багатство та колорит культури Китаю, що ніколи не буде до кінця осягнений людиною Західного світу, стала останньою екзотичною мандрівкою у творчості композитора.

For the 120th anniversary of the Lviv National Opera, for the first time in the history of the theater and on the Lviv theater scene in general, the opera "Turandot" - the last work of the famous Italian composer Giacomo Puccini - was staged.

The operas "Manon Lescaut", "Bohème", "Madame Butterfly", "Tosca" brought Giacomo Puccini world fame as a unique lyricist who subtly embodied the psychological nuances of his characters, and in particular, the central characters - gentle, in love, fragile and courageous in their feelings of women.

Even during the composer's lifetime, his operas were performed on the world's leading stages, and he - an elegant handsome man who was fond of cars - enjoyed great popularity. In his operas, he never betrayed the truth: the most important thing is the charm of the melody, the sophistication and beauty of singing, rejecting the latest modern phenomena in musical art - the leveling of melody and tonal harmony. "In Italy they used to sing, but now they don't!" Puccini claimed, "Only beats, dissonant chords, false expression, transparency, fluidity, colorlessness."

In 1918, the composer finished three one-act operas - the triptych "Sister Angelica", "The Raincoat" and "Gianni Scicchi", and was looking for a plot for a new work. He was attracted by a play that was being performed on the German stage at the time - "Turandot" by Friedrich Schiller, staged by Max Reinhardt. On the Italian stage, the tragicomic fairy tale about the Chinese Princess first appeared in the work of the playwright Carlo Gozzi, who turned to the sources of the 12th century - the story of the Azerbaijani poet Nizami. The composer mentioned this in a letter to librettist Renato Simoni in March 1920, and also added:

"Dear Simoni, I have read Turandot, I think it is not worth abandoning this plot. ... But it must be simplified - reduce the number of actions and elaborate - make it more flexible, effective, and most importantly - ignite Turandot's love passion, which she had extinguished for so long under the ashes of her great pride" (Giacomo Puccini, letter to Renato Simoni , March 18, 1920 ). 

Since then, active work on the libretto begins with Giuseppe Adami, who worked with Puccini on his previous operas - "The Swallow" and "The Cloak", and the famous playwright and critic Renato Simoni. Unfortunately, due to the busyness of the librettists on other projects, the work went too slowly, which the composer reproached in numerous letters:

“My longing, I would say – almost suffering from idleness and desire to work on the tyrant-Princess – is getting bigger every day. I remember that it was August when we talked about the script! And in twenty days it will be Christmas! ... I do not reproach, but if my words had a point, then you, thoroughbred horse, would feel that your flanks are pierced by spurs" (Giacomo Puccini, letter to Renato Simoni , December 4, 1920 ).

Unpredictably for the composer, who worked with great enthusiasm on the libretto, looking for characteristic Chinese themes, the work on the opera dragged on for four long years. The last love duet of Turandot and Calaf was missing, the text of which Puccini was constantly dissatisfied with:

"I want him to be human; because when the heart speaks, action takes place in China or in Holland, the feelings are always the same, and everyone's aspirations are the same" (Giacomo Puccini, letter to Renato Simoni , March 25 , 1924 ).

Puccini tried to finish the opera as soon as possible (the premiere was already scheduled for April 1925), but his health worsened, and finally, in the fall, throat surgery was necessary.

"I suffer like Christ crucified on the cross!" (Giacomo Puccini, letter to his friend Angolino Magrini, November 1924 ) .

To the hospital in Brussels, Puccini took with him the most valuable - sketches of the final duet and chorus of the opera "Turandot", which he was never able to complete: the composer's heart could not withstand the complications after the operation and stopped on November 29, 1924. The premiere of his last work - the opera "Turandot" - was canceled during the composer's lifetime.

So the last thing that Puccini managed to complete was the scene of the death of the slave Liu, her sacrificial act for the sake of love for Calaf. On the stage of the Lviv National Opera in the production of the Polish director Michał Znanetskyi and the conductor Ivan Cherednichenko, just such a finale will be heard - the composer's original version.

But after Puccini's death, the composer's student Franco Alfano undertook to complete the opera "Turandot" based on his sketches in cooperation with conductor Arturo Toscanini, who agreed to conduct the premiere at Puccini's request during his lifetime. A love duet and a happy ending were added: love for the Unknown Prince in Turandot's heart was born with the dawn - there will be no more cruel executions, on a new day everyone celebrates the victory of love.

Whether Toscanini was satisfied with the finale of the opera remains a mystery: as is known, he felt the work of Puccini subtly, and the composer himself deeply appreciated his performance and interpretation of his own works. The fact remains that at the premiere performance of the opera "Turandot", which took place at the Milanese theater "La Scala" on April 25, 1926, Toscanini lowered the conductor's baton and stopped the orchestra exactly at the place - the mourning of the victim of the slave Liu - at which "death snatched the pen from the hands of the composer." Alfano's completed opera with a love duet and finale was presented only the next day, probably without Toscanini's participation.

So the opera "Turandot" is an unsolved mystery - what was the finale of the opera supposed to be? Did Liu's sacrifice and Calaf's kiss melt the ice in Turandot's heart?... The death of the composer left many mysteries about this work, just like the mystery-filled plot of this tale.

The exotic sound of the legendary China in the opera is manifested through colorful discoveries in melody and harmony, a colorful orchestral score and epic, large-scale choral episodes. They serve as a background for the unfolding of the plot and the reflection of the characters of the heroes with their human passions and desires: Prince Calaf, his father Timur and two opposite female images - the cold and impregnable Turandot and the gentle and submissive slave Liu. Sarcastic and sharp, even cruel, are the imperial advisors - Ping, Pong and Pang, whose characters come from the masks of merrymakers of the Italian fair comedy "del arte". In the production of the Lviv National Opera, there are many ballet scenes - such as the solo of the Prince of Persia - the first victim of love before Turandot. The choreographer of the opera is Diana Theocharidis, who created a dance production online,

In the scenography and images of the choir, the embodiment of the petrified terracotta army - the legendary imperial army, which is designed to protect the state both in the real world and in the extraterrestrial - is of great importance. The petrified Chinese soldiers show no sympathy for the executed princes, and only Liu's death awakens feelings - and therefore life - in them.

This is not the first time that the composer is fascinated by the exoticism of distant lands - in his previous operas "Madame Butterfly" the action takes place in Japan, in the opera "Girl from the West" - in the American Wild West. This time, Puccini was enchanted by the fabulous Beijing. The flight away from Europe to the mirage of the exotic East, the world of fairy tales about the dazzling beauty of the Princess and the richness and color of Chinese culture, which will never be fully understood by the people of the Western world, became the last exotic journey in the composer's work.
