In our current production of TURANDOT, Philipp Stölzl translates the "Ice Princess" into an overdimensional puppet that reflects Turandot's states of mind and the opera's major thematic arcs in a surreally dark way. Take a glimpse behind the scenes of this massiv project and learn how the 6.5 metre tall puppet - affectionately called "Dotti" by our technicians - was brought to life.

Behind the scenes of TURANDOT

Princess Turandot does not want to be anyone’s bride. And she is willing to do anything to protect her independence. Her strategy so far for ridding herself of burdensome suitors has been this: anyone who wants to marry her needs to solve three riddles. One wrong answer costs her prospective groom his life. Hundreds of men try their luck and fall victim to Turandot’s violent despotism. But then comes one man who can solve the riddles.

Giacomo Puccini’s last opera, »Turandot«, was never finished. Until his death, the composer never found a satisfying setting for the concluding love scene. Only after his friend, the Italian composer Franco Alfano, completed the finale we know today, basing it on Puccini’s sketches, did the opera have its world premiere in April 1926 at the Scala in Milan – and became a ground-breaking success. In »Turandot«, Puccini uses a previously unknown colour palette of East Asian melodies in the orchestral part and seeks to recreate the sounds of the ancient Chinese Empire. The director Philipp Stölzl, who in addition to operas and plays has directed feature films, television adverts and music videos, contributes a surreal visual language influenced by Dark Romanticism.

Bisher ging die Strategie auf, um sich lästige Verehrer vom Hals zu schaffen: Jeder, der sie heiraten will, muss drei Rätsel lösen. Wer das nicht schafft, bezahlt mit dem Leben. Hunderte versuchen ihr Glück und fallen der grausamen Gewaltherrschaft Turandots zum Opfer. Doch dann taucht ein Mann auf, der die Rätsel lösen kann ...

Giacomo Puccinis letzte Oper »Turandot« blieb unvollendet. Der Komponist fand bis zu seinem Tod keine Wendung für die finale Liebesszene, die ihn überzeugte. Erst nachdem sein Freund, der italienische Komponist Franco Alfano, das Finale, das heute weltweit zu hören ist, nach den Skizzen Puccinis zu Ende komponiert hatte, wurde die Oper im April 1926 an der Mailänder Scala uraufgeführt und zu einem bahnbrechenden Erfolg. In »Turandot« verwendet Puccini ein bis dahin unbekanntes Farbspektrum fernöstlicher Melodien im Orchester und spürt den Klängen des alten chinesischen Kaiserreichs nach. Dem begegnet der Regisseur Philipp Stölzl, der neben Musik- und Sprechtheater vor allem Spielfilme, Werbespots und Musikvideos inszeniert, mit einer von Schwarzer Romantik gezeichneten surrealen Bildsprache.
