About the work

The last opera of the great magician of Italian opera is one of his most sought-after works. Puccini took great care in choosing his subject - he wanted it to be dramatic, but to allow the use of exotics, fantasy and illusion as a background for a great love story. He found all this in a story that had previously been used several times as a theme for operas - but became the most famous thanks to Schiller's dramatization and C. Gozzi's fairy-tale play about the Chinese princess Turandot. Puccini's exotic theme inspired the use of motifs of traditional Chinese music and its sonority. He managed to create a monumental, fantastic and at the same time passionate opera. He tried to use other musical means than in his previous opera Madama Butterfly, also inspired by the Far East. During the composition, the composer suffered from a serious illness, which he finally succumbed to before completing the work. However, he left sketches of his other musical ideas, thanks to which the opera could be reconstructed and completed by F. Alfan. It was presented as a complete three-act work in 1926 at Milan's La Scale.
