A long time ago in distant China...
The same spectacle for years: Noble suitors from all over the world court Princess Turandot, who ties her conquest to the solution of three riddles. Whoever fails dies. Calaf witnesses an execution, but cannot escape Turandot's charisma. Nothing deters him from his determination to win the princess over.

Productions of Puccini's last opera often turn into a clichéd spectacle. What seemed exotically interesting when it was first performed in 1926 reports nothing new almost a hundred years later and runs the risk of giving the impression of an over-decorated Chinese restaurant. Renaud Doucet and André Barbe therefore took a different path and moved the fairy tale about the ice-cold princess to the exotic realm of insects.

Vor langer Zeit im fernen China …
Seit Jahren immer das gleiche Spektakel: Noble Freier aus aller Herren Länder werben um die Prinzessin Turandot, die ihre Eroberung an die Lösung dreier Rätsel bindet. Wer scheitert, stirbt. Calaf wird Zeuge einer Hinrichtung, kann sich aber der Ausstrahlung Turandots nicht entziehen. Nichts bringt ihn von seinem Entschluss ab, die Prinzessin für sich zu gewinnen.

Inszenierungen von Puccinis letzter Oper geraten oft zum klischeehaften Ausstattungsspektakel. Was im Uraufführungsjahr 1926 noch exotisch-interessant anmutete, berichtet nahezu hundert Jahre später nichts Neues und läuft Gefahr, den Eindruck eines überdekorierten China-Restaurants zu vermitteln. Renaud Doucet und André Barbe beschritten deshalb einen anderen Weg und verlegten das Märchen um die eiskalte Prinzessin ins exotische Reich der Insekten.
