Puccini's most impressive New York production of his latest opera, seen on-site, via HD, but also on videotape and DVD, has become a distinguished favorite of the world's opera audience. In the role of the ice-hearted princess, we find Ukrainian soprano Liudmyla Monastyrska, who has sung several lead roles on the Met stage since her debut in 2012. Around Monastyrska we can find, among others, the South Korean tenor, Yonghoon Lee, who was sought after worldwide in Kalaf's voice, or Ferruccio Furlanetto, who has always been enthusiastic about Budapest.
Hunting for almost uninterrupted subjects, Puccini was aroused as early as 1911 by "Turandot's passion, which drowned for so long under the ashes of his immense pride," but at the time of his death in 1924 he still left his fairy-tale opera in China unfinished. The Turandot, completed by Franco Alfano, still became a hit opera at the moment of its premiere: Metbe, for example, arrived in the fall of 1926 in less than half a year, and has since been performed in more than 330 performances. A real milestone in Turandot's history in New York was Zeffirelli's 1987 production, whose offensive visuals were initially likened to a Chinese restaurant or even a laundry by some critics. The Ukrainian soprano Liudmyla Monastyrska, who has previously sung at the Ukrainian National Opera and Bolshoi in Moscow, is now joining the long-established classic - and at the same time the Met Turandot (following Birgit Nilsson and Éva Marton). The other female lead in the performance under Marco Armiliato's wand, the opportunity to portray little Liù, will be given to young American soprano Michelle Bradley.
