The Tartar prince Calaf was able to do what no one had before: He solved the three riddles that Princess Turandot asked each of her suitors. Not only did he unexpectedly save his head, but he also earned the right to marry the princess. Since, contrary to the agreement, she is not willing to do this, the prince now poses a riddle to her himself: to find out his name within one night.

As the second half of this opera begins, her only chance of remaining unmarried is to learn the prince's name.
