Turandot is Puccini's last opera. He took as a basis the play of Carlo Gozzi, the plot of which was borrowed from an ancient Persian fairy tale. In 1919, the composer saw a dramatic performance based on the work of Gozzi at the Max Reinhardt Theater and called it the most humane of the works of the Italian playwright. He considered in this story the eternal theme of the victory of light over darkness.

According to the plot, the cruel princess Turandot came up with a test for applicants for her hand - three riddles. Those who could not guess them were immediately executed. Only Prince Calaf, thanks to his ingenuity, not only coped with the task, but also managed to melt the heart of the beauty. The opera ends with jubilation: the princess has finally found love.

Puccini was not destined to finish the opera - he died in 1924. The last scenes were completed by Franco Alfano from the composer's sketches. The world premiere of Turandot took place at La Scala in 1926. The premiere performance was conducted by Arturo Toscanini. That evening, only the music that the composer himself wrote sounded. During the third act, Toscanini put down his baton, turned into the hall and said: “Puccini stopped here. Death proved to be stronger than art .

The most famous number from the opera "Turandot" was Prince Calaf's brilliant aria Nessun dorma , which is rightfully recognized as one of the greatest hits of opera music.

«Турандот» – последняя опера Пуччини. Он взял за основу пьесу Карло Гоцци, сюжет которой позаимствован из древней персидской сказки. В 1919 году композитор увидел в театре Макса Рейнхардта драматический спектакль по произведению Гоцци и назвал его самым человечным из сочинений итальянского драматурга. Он рассмотрел в этой истории вечную тему победы света над тьмой.

По сюжету жестокая принцесса Турандот придумала испытание для претендентов на ее руку – три загадки. Те, кто не смогли их отгадать, тут же были казнены. Лишь принц Калаф благодаря смекалке не только справился с заданием, но и сумел растопить сердце красавицы. Опера заканчивается ликованием: принцесса наконец обрела любовь.

Закончить оперу Пуччини было не суждено – он скончался в 1924 году. Последние сцены были завершены Франко Альфано по эскизам композитора.
