Turandot by Giacomo Puccini

 Opera in three acts, by Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) and Franco Alfano (1875-1954) -after Puccini's death-, with an Italian libretto by Giuseppe Adami (1878-1946) and Renato Simoni (1875-1952), based on the homonymous fable by Carlo Gozzi (1720-1806).  It was premiered at the Teatro alla Scala, in Milan, on April 25, 1926.

 A cold and vindictive Chinese princess, called Turandot, puts all her suitors to the test: those who do not answer three of her riddles correctly, not only cannot marry her, but also lose her life.  As the execution of the prince of Persia is about to take place, a blind old man appears from the crowd.  A boy comes to help the old man and discovers that it is his father Timur, the king of the Tartars, accompanied by the young Liù.  Turandot is present and the young prince is captivated by her beauty, determined to present himself to her.  Surprisingly, she passes the tests, but Turandot refuses to marry him.  The unknown prince proposes to Turandot that if she guesses her name before dawn, he will die and she will be free of her.  Turandot accepts and goes through the town in search of those who know her identity.  When she arrives with Liù, she refuses to reveal her name and she dies with her secret, after being tortured.  Shocked by Turandot's cruelty, the young suitor speaks alone with the princess and, in her whisper, tells her that her name is Calaf;  granting him thus, the decision of her future.  In the morning, Turandot appears before her subjects and exclaims that the prince's name is "Love".
