Graham Fitkin and friends are united for the composer’s landmark piano works, a Fitkin world premiere, and music by his influences and successors.

Graham Fitkin has been ‘mucking about with the piano’ since childhood. The results are energetic, beguilingly and utterly distinctive.

At the heart of this concert are works for multiple pianos that shot to fame when Fitkin’s album Flak was released on Factory Records in 1990.

In the title track, the eight hands of four pianists caper around the white notes of two pianos with irresistible rhythmic verve and harmonic bonhomie.

Sciosophy juxtaposes blocks of material with a combination of swagger and brutality. The composer’s tribute to Francesco Totti trades the composer’s usually dense sound for all the lightness, dexterity and lyricism of the Italian footballer.

With the rhythmic drive of pop music, the cumulative power of rolling symphonies and the streetwise edge of urban genres, Fitkin’s music is as stimulating as it is timeless and cool.

We hear it here alongside music that influenced Fitkin, and music that wouldn’t have been written without him.
