Un avvertimento ai gelosi is an opera that interprets a story of jealousy on the part of the farmer Berto towards his wife, Sandrina, even though she is faithful to him. This situation is aggravated by the visit of the feudal lord and his servant, who are attracted to Sandrina, and who sees an ideal opportunity to punish her husband for his jealousy. Sandrina, then, begins to flirt with the feudal lord. Having approached the woman, the feudal lord expresses his desire to marry her, and they leave as Berto tries to chase after them.

The feudal lord's wife, then, shares her sadness with the gardener, Menico, who, knowing Sandrina's intention to punish her husband, expresses Ernesta's sadness to him. The two then arrange a fake wedding with the feudal lord that very night, on the condition that it be in the dark.

During the ceremony, Menico hides Berto in a closet from where he watches the fake wedding. In the middle of the ceremony, Berto comes out with a knife in a rage, but the feudal lord orders the lights to be turned on, at which point the truth is revealed. This event causes Berto's regret.

Un avvertimento ai gelosi és una òpera que interpreta una història de gelosia per part del pagès Berto envers la seva dona, Sandrina, tot i que ella li és fidel. Aquesta situació es veu agreujada per la visita del senyor feudal i el seu criat, els quals es veuen atrets per Sandrina, i qui veu una oportunitat ideal per castigar el seu marit per la seva gelosia. Sandrina, llavors, comença a coquetejar amb el senyor feudal. Després d’haver-se apropat a la dona, el senyor feudal li expressa el seu desig de casar-se amb ella, i marxen mentre en Berto intenta perseguir-los.

La dona del senyor feudal, doncs, comparteix la seva tristesa amb el jardiner, Menico, qui, coneixent la intenció de Sandrina de castigar el seu marit, li expressa la tristesa d’Ernesta. Tots dos, llavors, organitzen un casament fals amb el senyor feudal aquella mateixa nit, amb la condició que sigui a les fosques.

Durant la cerimònia, Menico amaga en Berto en un armari des d’on observa el fals casament. Enmig de la cerimònia, Berto surt amb un ganivet enfurismat, però el senyor feudal ordena encendre els llums, moment en el qual es descobreix la veritat. Aquest esdeveniment provoca el penediment de Berto.
