exotic! To take people to the most different places in the world, to make them forget everyday life, that has always been a concern of the operetta. And Paul Abraham succeeded in doing this in an almost perfect way with his masterpiece "Victoria and her Hussar": Siberia, Tokyo, St. Petersburg and the village of Doroszma in Hungary are the stations of that work, the premiere of which brought the world fame of the Jewish-Hungarian composer Paul Abraham justified. The operetta is a style-defining work through and through, which with its cosmopolitan attitude can definitely be described as a »big city operetta« and reflects the vibrant Berlin of the early 1930s. With a mixture of exoticism, Hungarian color, the emerging jazz and the fashionable dances of the time, the composer succeeded in reviving the genre of "operetta" without losing sight of its long tradition. Hits like " My Mama was from Yokohama" , " Mausi", "You were sweet tonight" and " Give me your hands once more to say goodbye” were the hits of the season and went around the world.

While escaping from Russian captivity, hussar captain Stefan Koltay accidentally meets his beloved Viktoria again in Tokyo. Viktoria, whom Koltay thought dead, is now the wife of the American envoy Cunlight, who is to be transferred to St. Petersburg. In Petersburg, Viktoria avoids all contact with Koltay, as she still has deep feelings for her hussar. Koltay, who took the great risk of following Victoria to Russia, is recognized by the Russians and arrested. Koltay refuses any help from Cunlight. Ultimately, however, it is precisely the noble Cunlight that makes it possible for Viktoria and her hussar to find each other.
