Festival Opera Musical Director José Aparicio describes Mahler's 2nd Symphony 'Resurrection' - to be presented on Friday 21 October 2022 at Waiapu Cathedral, Napier, New Zealand.

Music to ease our troubled times

We Will Rise Again - Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 ‘Resurrection’ is an appropriate collaboration for the current turbulent times, taking the audience on an exhilarating and emotional journey through this moving piece, and reminding us of the importance of experiencing live music together as a community. Mahler was thought to have been inspired to write the expansive work after attending the funeral of a famous conductor, interpreting the wonder and exhilaration of resurrection in a musical context. 

Conductor José Aparicio leads a true community collaboration - bringing together a 55-strong orchestra of local and guest players, members of Project Prima Volta, Napier Civic Choir, Hastings Choral Society, Hastings Boys High Choir, Iona Pure and students from Taradale High School. The concert also features soloists and talented operatic artists and sisters Anna and Madeleine Pierard whose voices combine in sublime fashion.

The concert will feature over 150 performers, bringing together young performers and established choral musicians drawn from the Hawke’s Bay arts community and beyond.
