As early as 1682, the musician and music theorist Andreas Werckmeister noted that we live in times in which previously valid systems are shifting or dissolving so far that we have to ask ourselves whether they ever existed at all, when he laid the foundations for the well-tempered piano tuning determined.

Referring to cosmic and alchemical systems of order, he attempted to bring unity to the previous jumble of instrument tuning. His writings, which bear titles such as "Organ sample or short description ... how ... a piano should be tempered ... sey" or "The dignity, use and abuse of noble music art" tell of the primal human longing, an order in chaos of creation and failure in attempting to maintain that order in actual present time.
Doubts about the unambiguous describability of the world is also what drives the Swiss theater artist Thom Luz in his first work at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden. Luz is a border crosser between spoken and musical theatre, his protagonists are always on the search for the world secret and get tangled up in everyday problems. Together with the musician and arranger Mathias Weibel, Luz has developed a theatrical language in recent years that combines silence, movement, text and music into dense, atmospheric spatial scores.
