WERTHER Lyric drama by Jules Massenet based on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Poetry by Edouard Blau, Paul Milliet and Georges Hartmann In French with German surtitles Werther and Charlotte fall madly in love with each other. But Charlotte marries Albert, having promised her dying mother. She absolutely wants to keep this oath. Werther initially shows understanding and even results in Charlotte's desire to distance himself from him. It quickly becomes clear, however, that he doesn't want to live without Charlotte. With his epistolary novel DIE LEIDEN DES JUNGEN WERTHERS, Goethe created a masterpiece of sensitivity that served Jules Massenet in 1884 as the basis for an opera that looks far beyond the stereotypes of Romanticism. It's about more than the often-told story of two people who only find each other in the hour of death. Massenet's drama asks questions about love, freedom and personal happiness that are valid regardless of the fashion and taste of an era: How free are you in your decisions and how much is determined by the actions and feelings of people who are close to you? Can you deny your own feelings and still be happy? In deeply lyrical passages and highly dramatic outbursts, Massenet's opera reflects the turmoil of the characters who are caught in their longings, fears and, last but not least, expectations of themselves.
