With his work, Goethe has inspired a number of artists, including opera authors. Thus, several well-known works were created, especially by French composers: Mignon Ambrois Thomas, Faust by Carl Gounod or Werther by Julio Massenet. The Suffering of Young Werther, a novel in the form of letters from 1774, became a cult book shortly after its publication, in which some readers found themselves - and several followed the protagonist to suicide. The work represents the German pre-romantic literary movement Sturm und Drang (Storm and Defiance), which emphasized human emotionality in response to the cold rationalism of the Enlightenment. Massenet's compositional style, which he followed in the footsteps of his teacher Thomas and his colleague Gounod, attracts attention above all with its rich melodicity and colorful instrumentation modeled on Richard Wagner. With his suggestive musical language, he interprets a story of emotions that the main characters cannot fulfill. Werther returns to the National Theater in Prague after almost eighty years (the last time they played there was in 1927-1939).
