WEST SIDE STORY
Openly adapted from Romeo and Juliet , work of all records, almost everyone knows West Side Story , or in any case the film by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins, with Natalie Wood, made in 1961. A little less perhaps the lyrical drama from which it is taken... Created four years earlier on Broadway where the show ran for no less than 732 performances, West Side Story then very quickly conquered the world and crossed the years thanks to music at the learned, rhythmic and popular times of Bernstein (Maria, America, Somewhere, Tonight, I Feel Pretty…), to this universal story that has proven itself since Shakespeare and, of course… to dance!

Upper West Side neighborhood in Manhattan. The Jets and the Sharks, two gangs of young people from poor neighborhoods, are vying for control of the neighborhood. The former, originating from Ireland or Poland, consider themselves masters of the place because they were born in the United States. The latter, originally from Puerto Rico, more recent immigrants, come up against their hostility and respond to violence with violence. It is in this context that Tony, friend of the leader of the Jets, and Maria, sister of the leader of the Sharks, will meet and love each other despite the world around them and, who knows, with the hope of reconciling the 'irreconcilable. It is once again Gaël Lépingle who will sign the staging of this opera given in March 2022.

West Side Story is a work that one dreams of touching, working on, feeling, living from within. But it is also a monument, which no one dares approach, so inaccessible is it.
Besides, how to qualify it? Musical comedy, choreographic opera, comedy, drama, very playful, very dated, very contemporary, scholarly music, popular music, jazz, Cuban music…
It's a masterpiece just the way I like it: with an accomplished complex simplicity. Everyone can see and understand what he is ready to receive.
I like complex music that is understood by everyone. I like the authors, the composers, the painters, the creators who manage to transcribe their emotions, their desires, their fights, by letting them appear as obvious for all and understood by all.

I deeply love West Side Story .

Ouvertement adapté de Roméo et Juliette, œuvre de tous les records, tout le monde ou presque connaît West Side Story, ou en tout cas le film de Robert Wise et Jerome Robbins, avec Natalie Wood, réalisé en 1961. Un peu moins peut-être le drame lyrique dont il est tiré… Créé quatre ans plus tôt à Broadway où le spectacle a tenu l’affiche durant pas moins de 732 représentations, West Side Story a ensuite très vite conquis le monde et traversé les années grâce à la musique à la fois savante, rythmée et populaire de Bernstein (Maria, America, Somewhere, Tonight, I Feel Pretty…), à cette histoire universelle qui a fait ses preuves depuis Shakespeare et, bien sûr… à la danse !

Quartier de l’Upper West Side, à Manhattan. Les Jets et les Sharks, deux bandes de jeunes des quartiers pauvres, se disputent le contrôle du quartier. Les premiers, originaires d’Irlande ou de Pologne, se considèrent comme les maîtres des lieux car ils sont nés aux États-Unis. Les seconds, originaires de Porto-Rico, immigrés plus récemment, se heurtent à leur hostilité et répondent à la violence par la violence. C’est dans ce contexte que Tony, ami du chef des Jets, et Maria, sœur du chef des Sharks, vont se rencontrer et s’aimer en dépit du monde qui les entoure et, qui sait, avec l’espoir de réconcilier l’irréconciliable. C’est à nouveau Gaël Lépingle qui signera la mise en scène de cet opéra donné en mars 2022.

West Side Story est une œuvre qu’on rêve de toucher, de travailler, de sentir, de vivre de l’intérieur. Mais c’est aussi un monument, qu’on n’ose approcher, tant il paraît inaccessible.
D’ailleurs, comment le qualifier ? Comédie musicale, opéra chorégraphique, comédie, drame, très enjoué, très daté, très contemporain, musique savante, musique populaire, jazz, musique cubaine…
C’est un chef d’œuvre comme je les aime : d’une simplicité complexe aboutie. Chacun peut y voir et comprendre ce qu’il est prêt à recevoir.
J’aime la musique complexe qui est comprise par tous. J’aime les auteurs, les compositeurs, les peintres, les créateurs qui arrivent à transcrire leurs émotions, leurs désirs, leurs combats, en les laissant apparaître comme évidents pour tous et entendus de tous.

J’aime profondément West Side Story.
