Orpheus is a musician. Eurydice, his wife, is a nymph. On their wedding day, she was bitten by a snake and died immediately. Orpheus, in despair, obtains permission from the gods to go and find her in hell. The only condition is that their two eyes never meet. He fails, he looks at her, and Eurydice dies a second time.

Gluck's opera (1762) has the power of masterpieces, of those who say the essential. The music accurately transcribes the vertigo of loss. For me, today, it is an opera about mourning, breaking up, and falling out of love. But tomorrow he will tell me something else. Orpheus and Eurydice speaks to us every moment of our life, endlessly, tirelessly. It is this strength that I wish to share with an audience, with joy, humor, generosity, without heaviness or overhang, with a simplicity close to what makes our lives, between drama and lightness.
