In keeping with the occasion, the exclusively Austrian programme will celebrate some of the central characteristics of the 'Alpine Republic' under the baton of Simone Young. 'Shrunken Symphony' is the ironic name given by Kurt Schwertsik to his work - lasting around five minutes - which the Wiener Symphoniker will perform in celebration of the 80th birthday of composer, who also happens to be their former hornist. Great virtuosity is demanded of the soloist (Louis Lortie in this case) by Franz Liszt in his edition of Schubert’s 'Wanderer Fantasy' for piano and orchestra. This will be followed by Liszt’s seldom-played Symphony to Dante's 'Divine Comedy', with its timeless mood somewhere between melancholy and the expectation of redemption. Please note: This concert is presented as part of a cooperation between the Wiener Symphoniker and the Wiener Konzerthaus Society.

Dem feierlichen Anlass entsprechend feiert das ausschließlich österreichische Programm zentrale Charakteristika der Alpenrepublik unter der Leitung der Dirigentin Simone Young. "Schrumpf-Symphonie" nennt Kurt Schwertsik ironisch sein nur etwa fünf Minuten dauerndes Werk, das die Wiener Symphoniker zu Ehren des 80. Geburtstags ihres früheren Hornisten aufführen. Große Virtuosität fordert Franz Liszt dem Solisten (hier Louis Lortie) in seiner Bearbeitung von Schuberts "Wanderer-Fantasie" für Klavier und Orchester ab, bevor Liszts selten gespielte Symphonie zu Dantes "Divina Commedia" mit seiner zeitlosen Stimmung zwischen Melancholie und Erlösungserwartung das Konzert beschließt. Anmerkung: Dieses Konzert wird im Rahmen einer Kooperation zwischen den Wiener Symphonikern und der Wiener Konzerthausgesellschaft durchgeführt.
