Stabat Mater, krščanska himna v dvajsetih kiticah, ki opisuje Jezusovo mater Marijo, trpečo pod križem, izvira iz 13. stoletja. Njen avtor je najverjetneje Jakob iz Todija. Kot večstoletni del katoliške liturgije je navdihovala številne skladatelje. Tako jo poznamo v preprostem koralnem napevu, znameniti Pergolesijevi uglasbitvi kot tudi novejših delih Arva Pärta, Jamesa MacMillana in drugih.

V obliki obsežne duhovne kantate oz. oratorija se je besedila lotil tudi Antonín Dvořák. Delo je nastajalo med letoma 1876 in 1877, nato je rokopis skupaj s prošnjo za štipendijo poslal na Dunaj. Prva izvedba je bila leta 1880 v Pragi, dve leti pozneje v Brnu pod taktirko Leoša Janáčka, še leto zatem v Londonu, tista v Kraljevi Albertovi dvorani iz leta 1884 pa mu je odprla mednarodno prepoznavnost. Dvořákova Stabat Mater danes ostaja med njegovimi najznamenitejšimi in najpogosteje izvajanimi sakralnimi deli.

The Stabat Mater , a Christian hymn in twenty stanzas that describes Mary, the mother of Jesus, suffering under the cross, dates from the 13th century. Its author is most likely Jakob from Todi. As a centuries-old part of the Catholic liturgy, it has inspired many composers. This is how we know it in a simple chorale tune, in Pergolesi's famous setting, as well as in more recent works by Arvo Pärt, James MacMillan and others.

In the form of an extensive spiritual cantata or Antonín Dvořák also tackled the text of the oratorio. The work was created between 1876 and 1877, after which he sent the manuscript together with a request for a scholarship to Vienna. The first performance was in Prague in 1880, two years later in Brno under the baton of Leoš Janáček, a year later in London, and the one in the Royal Albert Hall in 1884 brought him international recognition. Dvořák's Stabat Mater remains today among his most famous and most frequently performed sacred works.
