The work is the shortened version in one act of the musical comedy Zêna  ( If I Think Home ), inspired by the popular song Ma se ghe credo. The plot follows the story of a young boy from Genoa at the end of the 19th century, who leaves to seek his fortune in Argentina armed only with good hopes and a basil plant, thanks to which he will succeed. Despite this, once in the years, the protagonist will succumb to homesickness and will return to Genoa.

The staff of this single act includes five singing actors - four of whom alternate in double, triple roles - a quartet of musicians and a video element to portray the now elderly protagonist, voice and narrating face of the whole story.

The narrative focuses on the difficulties of those who, yesterday as today, flee from a life of hardship to revive the fortunes of their existence, but have to deal with the call of their roots. Zêna is aimed in particular at an audience of students, with the aim of making them aware of the issue of immigration.

Thanks to the light language and to the musical and videographic supports, the work lends itself to introducing the youngest to the theatrical story and to promote theatrical culture in schools.

L’opera è la versione ridotta in atto unico della commedia musicale Zêna (If I Think Home), ispirata alla canzone popolare Ma se ghe penso. La trama segue la storia di un ragazzino della Genova di fine ‘800, che parte per cercare fortuna in Argentina armato solo di buone speranze e di una piantina di basilico, grazie alla quale riuscirà ad affermarsi. Nonostante ciò, una volta in là con gli anni, il protagonista cederà alla nostalgia di casa e tornerà a Genova.

L’organico di questo atto unico prevede cinque attori cantanti – quattro dei quali si alternano in doppio, triplo ruolo – un quartetto di musicisti e un elemento video a ritrarre il protagonista ormai anziano, voce e volto narrante dell’intera vicenda.

La narrazione è incentrata sulle difficoltà di coloro che, ieri come oggi, fuggono da una vita di stenti per risollevare le sorti della propria esistenza, ma devono fare i conti con il richiamo delle proprie radici. Zêna è indirizzata in particolare ad un pubblico di studenti, con l’obiettivo di sensibilizzarli al tema dell’immigrazione.

Grazie al linguaggio leggero e ai supporti musicali e videografici, l’opera si presta ad introdurre i più giovani al racconto teatrale e a promuovere la cultura teatrale nelle scuole.
