Durante i sette anni di dittatura dei colonnelli, dal 1967 al 1974, Mikis Theodorakis venne imprigionato, torturato e bandito dalla scena musicale greca. Ma non per questo smise di comporre, ispirandosi al patriota Alexandros Panagulis. In quel tempo la sua musica era già diventata la pelle sonora del suo paese, soprattutto grazie alla Danza di Zorba, il celebre sirtaki ballato sulla spiaggia da Anthony Quinn in Zorba il greco di Michael Cacoyannis, un film entrato così potentemente nell’immaginario collettivo da consegnare al mondo, e alla Grecia stessa, una nuova danza nazionale diventata immediatamente popolare e senza tempo. Ancora oggi l’identità della Grecia moderna si specchia nei ritmi in accelerazione di quella scena epica, girata sull’isola di Creta.

Jailed, tortured and banned from the music scene by the Regime of the Colonels that ruled Greece from 1967 to 1974, Mikis Theodorakis was always inspired by patriot-poet Alexandros Panagulis and never stopped composing. His music had been a trademark for his Country since the main theme of Michael Cacoyannis’s film Zorba the Greek, danced on the beach by Anthony Quinn’s character, had powerfully entered the world’s collective imagination immediately establishing the sirtaki as a new national folkdance, hugely popular and timeless, and the symbol of Greece itself. To this day, the identity of modern Greece is mirrored in the accelerating rhythms of that epic scene, filmed on the island of Crete.
