First time Die Zauberflöte by Mozart was performed in Vienna on 30 September 1791. Libretto was written in German by an actor, director and impresario, Emanuel Schikaneder, a friend of composer. He was the one to play of bird-catcher Papageno. Fairy tale plot, in the spirit of magic music comedies, popular at the time in Austria, resembled flamboyant spectacle. It was full of wonderful adventures and fantastic creatures with a hint to the relevant events and ideas. Similar to the plot, music style of the opera was multi layered as well. Simple singing numbers in singspiel way neighbored with the complex and coloratura arias, while camouflaged quotes from J. S. Bach and protestant chorale — with a music of masonic ceremonials.

Story canvas of Die Zauberflöte was the story about prince Tamino who set out for the search of princess Pamina accompanied by a gawk Papageno. With the help of magic music instruments, flute and bells, characters were able to complete dangerous journey and to find happiness; at the end of the opera two happy couples formed — Tamino and Pamina, Papageno and Papagena.

Masonic symbolism was easily spotted in the subtext of the tale (both Schikaneder and Mozart were active members of Masonic lodge). The symbolism was represented, first of all, by the confrontation of the darkness — world of the Queen of the Night and light — kingdom of Sarastro. In the closing scene, main heroes Tamino and Pamina, who went through the ritual of initiation together with the priests, glorified the strength, beauty and wisdom of Gods.

Soon after premiere, Die Zauberflöte gained popularity equaled to the one, which was ingratiated by its famous predecessors — Mozart opera Le nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni. After its first performance in Russia, with the joint forces of German company in 1790s, it was premiered in St. Petersburg with the participation of Russian artists in 1818.

Die Zauberflöte appeared on the poster of the Bolshoi Theatre for the first time on 29 March 1884. That day it was the first show under Karl Albrecht in the production by Anton Bartsal. The “magician of Moscow scene”, Karl Valtz, designed special effects. Later, performance was frequently revived, and in 1906, it was presented with redesigned decorations under the baton of Ulrich Avranek.

In the Soviet time, Die Zauberflöte was not a part of repertoire of the Bolshoi Theatre. It was included back in 2006 on a New Stage: bright, phantasmagorical performance staged by a famous British director Graham Vick and his co-author Paul Brown, magician of the world stage of XX Century. Steuart Bedford, acknowledged interpreter of Britten and Mozart compositions, was also considered music director of the production.

Premiere of Die Zauberflöte at the Chamber music theatre took place on 24 September 2004. It became the last work of the founder of the Theatre Boris Pokrovsky; co-authors were the conductor Vladimir Agronsky and artist designers Viktor and Rafael Volsky. Concise scenography and pretty traditional production, clear and precise in details, allowed to organically embody Mozart’s last opera onstage. It seemed like timelessness and humanity of Pokrovsky production synchronized with the “genetic code” of Mozart genius opera by its emphasis on music.

Первое исполнение оперы Моцарта «Волшебная флейта» состоялось в Вене 30 сентября 1791 года. Либретто на немецком языке написал актёр, режиссёр и импресарио Эмануэль Шиканедер, приятель композитора. Он же исполнял на премьере роль птицелова Папагено. Сказочный сюжет в духе популярных в Австрии волшебных музыкальных комедий представлял собой пёстрое зрелище, наполненное чудесными приключениями и фантастическими существами, которое дополнялось намёками на актуальные события и идеи. Подобно сюжету, многослойна была музыкальная стилистика оперы. Простые песенные номера в духе зингшпиля соседствовали со сложнейшими колоратурными ариями, завуалированные цитаты из И. С. Баха и протестантского хорала — с музыкой масонского церемониала…

Сюжетной канвой «Волшебной флейты» стала история о принце Тамино, отправившемся в сопровождении простака Папагено на поиски принцессы Памины. С помощью волшебных музыкальных инструментов, флейты и колокольчиков, героям удавалось успешно завершить опасное путешествие и обрести счастье: в финале оперы соединялись две счастливые пары — Тамино и Памина, Папагено и Папагена.

В подтексте сказки легко читалась масонская символика. (И Шиканедер, и Моцарт были активными членами масонских лож.) Её воплощало, прежде всего, противопоставление мрака — мира Царицы Ночи и света — царства Зарастро. В заключительной сцене главные герои, Тамино и Памина, пройдя обряд посвящения, вместе со жрецами славили силу, красоту и мудрость богов.

Вскоре после премьеры «Волшебная флейта» обрела популярность, равную той, что снискали её знаменитые предшественницы — оперы Моцарта «Свадьба Фигаро» и «Дон Жуан». После первых исполнений в России силами немецкой труппы, состоявшихся в 1790-х годах, в 1818-м премьера в Петербурге прошла уже с участием русских артистов.

На афише Большого театра «Волшебная флейта» впервые появилась 29 марта 1884 года. В этот день прошло её первое представление под управлением Карла Альбрехта, в постановке Антона Барцала и со «спецэффектами», придуманными «волшебником московской сцены» Карлом Вальцем. Впоследствии спектакль не раз возобновлялся, а в 1906 году был представлен с обновлёнными декорациями под управлением Ульриха Авранека.

В советское время «Волшебная флейта» в репертуаре Большого театра не значилась. Её возвращение произошло в 2005 году на Новой сцене: яркий, фантасмагорический спектакль, поставленный известным британским режиссёром Грэмом Виком и его соавтором — Полом Брауном, волшебником мировой сцены начала XX столетия. Музыкальным руководителем постановки стал также британец, Стюарт Бэдфорд, признанный интерпретатор сочинений Бриттена и Моцарта.

Премьера «Волшебной флейты» в Камерном музыкальном театре состоялась 24 сентября 2004 года. Этот спектакль стал последней работой основателя театра Бориса Покровского, соавторами которого выступили дирижёр Владимир Агронский и художники Виктор и Рафаил Вольские. Лаконичная сценография и достаточно традиционный, ясный и точный в деталях стиль постановки позволили органично воплотить на сцене последнюю оперу Моцарта. Вневременность и человечность спектакля Покровского как будто совпали с «генетическим кодом» гениальной оперы Моцарта, акцентировав внимание на музыке.
