An electrifying debut album from a new star of opera

On her debut album, Mirrors, the most immediately dazzling aspect of Jeanine De Bique’s singing is her articulation. No matter how fast the semiquavers fly – and they’re frequent flyers in the baroque repertoire she’s chosen — each note is crisply chiselled and secure. No smudging or fudging. The effect is electrifying, galvanising the music’s rhythms; enlivening the listener’s heartbeat too. As for the other impressive qualities of this rising singer from Trinidad (currently making her Paris Opera debut in Handel’s Alcina), you’re spoilt for choice. There’s the insouciant way she floats her top notes, as if the feat was nothing at all; or the elegantly varied timbres; or, underlying everything, the joyous sense of someone simply thrilled to be singing.
